Show THE EARTHQUAKE SUFFERERS Funds Needed to Make the Injured Residences Habitable CHABLESTON S C Sept 24 Letters haying hay-ing been received from all parts of the country coun-try asking whether the period of great distress dis-tress in Charleston has not passed the I statement is authorized that the relief committee com-mittee through the generosity of their fellow fel-low countrymen feel themselves in a position posi-tion to furnish subsistence and temporary l shelter to all who need it but at the same time the committee estimate that the relief funds at command or in prospect fall short of the money needed to put inhabitable in-habitable conditions the houses of persons who are unable to repair their buildings without aid The Government Engineers have inspected 600 buildings out of 7000 in the city and estimate the damage to those inspected at 22000000 Their inspection however covers most of the costly structures struct-ures The committee in assisting the needy householders to make the residences habitable habita-ble will deal first with those whose losses are small the object being to make as many roofs as possible tight foundations secure and chimneys safe before the cold weather comes The homes of widows and orphans and others helpless persons will have a paramount para-mount claim No loss of any person owning more than a house will be considered at this time The intention is also to disallow all claims for plastering as not being indispen sible to the reasonable safety and comfort The Subsistence Committee have supplied nearly all the persons requiring provisions and the number of rations issued today w the smallest since the commissariat was established es-tablished The force of clerks and the working work-ing force is being gradually reduced Today was very quiet No shocks were felt here and only a slight tremor at Sum merville Business i active and the merchants mer-chants are hopeful SACBAMENTO Sept Contributions for the relief of the earthquake sufferers serers amounting to 1150 were telegraphed to Charleston today PORTLAND Ogn Sept 2The committee commit-tee appointed by Mayor Gates to solicit aid for row Charleston will telegraph 2500 tomor |
