Show Reviewer gives nod to 'Surrender,' I but disdains 'Like Father, Like Son' Editor's Note: The following reviews are of two recently released motion pictures, "Like Father Like Son," starring Dudley Moore gi and Kirk Cameron; and "Surrender," starring Sally Field and Michael Caine, Guest reviewer is Charlotte MahJ. By CHARLOTTE MAUI I posedly to teach one about compassion com-passion and understanding for each other through the living or the other's life. It did not teach me anything, except ex-cept that film companies have an obligation to the public to cut down on the number of films produced if they cannot provide something original, ori-ginal, decent, educational, or character char-acter building. There are over 73 instances of vulgarity, no nudity, and little violence, though some destruction. It is rated PG-I3, and is supposed to be funny. I laughed hard once, although the general audience au-dience enjoyed it. This Rod Daniel's film is one stereotype after another, following the inference of the unimaginative title. Not only are fathers and sons portrayed in a stylized manner, but so are hospitals, classrooms, Indians, Indi-ans, professionals, archeologists and teenagers. The only comic relief from all of this madness is the character of the housekeeper, who is completely opposite to one in real life. The son's best friend, the Archeologist, and she are the only ones who even come close to being responsible people. The rest of the cast act like lunatics. ' ' Like Father Like Son' ' is a take off of the Disney movie "Freaky Friday," except that it is male-oriented. male-oriented. An Indian brain transference transfer-ence serum is used to exchange the brains of the father, played by Dudley Dud-ley Moore, and his teenaged son, played by Kirk Cameron. Each lives for under two days in the other's body, and the film is sup- to. It is even very funny! I Although there is a lot of partial I nudity, a suggestion of violence, I and 40 instances of swearing, it is H done in good taste and is necessary II to the story. It is rated PG. II There are several new twists to II the old story of 'boy meets girl' II which are innovative and enjoy- II able. One learns that it is possible to trust another again after many I mistakes, it is necessary to follow I your feelings about others, and it is more important to have love than I money. I The normal high speed car chase I is a bit different, with the Macho Moving Van try ing hard to keep up with a fast sports car whose driver forgot she was to be followed. The ending is quite a surprise, a real belly laugher, and very inventive. Surrender yourselves to an evening even-ing of good, clean fun! (The saxophone music is outstanding as the background music in this Cannon Group Film.) R Sally Field and Michael Caine star in this Warner Bros, comedy about two unhappy people caught up in mismatched love affairs who finally meet each other, fall in love, get rich, learn about themselves, and live happily ever after. It is rather true to life and easy to relate |
