Show Bountiful Fire Department offers rules for fire safety Winter is a time of year when the fire potential is high and good fire safety practices should be followed. fol-lowed. Bountiful City Fire department depart-ment has offered the following rules that may prove helpful this time of year. Before lighting a fire in the fireplace, make sure the flue is open. Always keep fireplace screens in place to confine embers and sparks. Keep the fireplace area clear of all flammables (i.e., paper, wood, clothing, etc.) Place all ashes from cleaning the fireplace in a metal container away from combustibles and preferably pre-ferably outside. Ashes may still be smoldering days after a fire and may be hot enough to ignite a fire. Home heating devices, such as electric or kerosene heaters should not be placed in operation near flammables like drapes or cloth chairs. Never keep more than five gallons of flammable liquids (i.e., gasoline, kerosene, propane, paint thinners, etc.) inside your home. Remember to keep flammable liquids li-quids stored in a metal cabinet. Always use a non-flammable candle holder. Keep candles where they can't be knocked over. Chimneys that are used often should be cleaned every other month to prevent large amounts of creosote build up. This may help to prevent a chimney fire. Do keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher within easy reach. Have all members of the family familiar with how the extinguisher operates and know where it is located. lo-cated. Furnaces should be inspected yearly. It should also be free of combustibles near the burn chamber. Heavy snow build-up makes hydrant locations very difficult for the fire department to spot. Fire hydrants should have a three foot area around them cleaned at all times. This is important if a fire in your neighborhood should occur and the water supply is necessary. To complete the fire safety check, a smoke detector should be installed in every level of the home. Make sure the detector has a U.L. label and a test button to periodic ally check the battery performance. perform-ance. Bountiful City Fire Department is still offering a home fire safety inspection to the residents of Bountiful. After a resident has received re-ceived a home inspection, a coupon is given which enables the home owner to purchase a smoke detector at a local retailer for only $2.99 (with the remaining balance paid by the fire department). To leam more about the program, prog-ram, or to schedule a time for a home inspection, call the fire station sta-tion at 298-6130 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday-Thursday.
