Show Wildcats second at Region swim meet By TOM HARALDSEN Sports Editor SALT LAKE CITY East High dominated the Region Four swimming championships at South High last weekend, but Woods Cross finished a strong second in both boys' and girls' competition, qualifying a large number of swimmers swim-mers for this weekend's state championships. In boys' competition, East finished with 369 points, while Woods Cross was second at 235. They were followed by Highland, Viewmont and Bountiful. Girls' scores showed the Leopards with 382 points, while Woods Cross was second at 220. Highland, Viewmont and Bountiful Bounti-ful rounded out the girls' finish as well. Among local state qualifiers, as reported to the Clipper, were Bountiful's Mike Hargroves in the 50 free and Todd Orchard in the 100 fly; and Viewmont's Chris Knolls in the 100 breast, Greg Garff in the 100 back and Rick Seelos in the 50 free. Woods Cross qualified a huge number of swimmers for state, including in-cluding Dave Diaz, who took third in the 200 free and fourth in the 500 free; Craig Kossin, third in the 200 IM and 100 back; Justin Mann, third in the 100 free and ninth in the 50 free; Eric McCune, sixth in the 100 breast; Ryan McCune, sixth in the 100 back; Carter Moore, fourth in diving; Dan Pace, second in diving; di-ving; Tim Rankin, fourth in the 200 free and fifth in the 500 free; Jeff Riley, second in the 100 fly; Shawn Stephenson, fourth in the 100 breast and sixth in the 200 IM; Mark Barnett, fifth in the 100 back, plus Matt Betts in the 100 fly and Jason Smith in the 500 free. Lady swimmers" earning state berths at region included Julie Cole of Bountiful and Holly Belnap of Viewmont. Woods Cross qualified Suzie Green in the 100 and 50 free (she won the 100 free); Jenny Johnson, John-son, fifth in the 200 free and 100 back; Tanya Lane, third in the 100 fly and fourth in the 100 back; Michelle Lubeck, third in the 200 IM and fifth in the 100 fly; Angie Olson, second in the 100 breast and fourth in the 200 IM; Allison Tweedy, fourth in both the 100 and 50 free; and Kyndell Rowe, winner of the diving. This year's state meet begins Friday at 9:30 a.m. at the University Universi-ty of Utah, with finals in girls' diving di-ving and four events starting at 5 p.m. Swimming begins again at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, with boys' diving di-ving finals and other events beginning begin-ning at 5:30, p.m. Friday evening.
