Show Motorcycle track's permit not renewed By GARY R. BLODGETT FARMINGTON The Davis County Planning Commission has decided to deny a Syracuse property proper-ty owner a "conditional use" permit per-mit to continue operation of a motorcycle track in that com; munity. The Planning Commission denied de-nied the conditional use application applica-tion of track operator Kevin Weaver Weav-er for the track to operate on 20 ', acres of pasture that he owns in Syracuse. He had petitioned the planning commission to allow for continued use of the property for both motorcycle motor-cycle and all-terrain vehicles. But the petition was denied on the grounds that the track use was not compatible with surrounding land uses. The request stems from a year ago when Mr. Weaver was granted conditional use for the track near 20th West and Gentile Road last summer. However, residents of the area bitterly protested to the planning commission that noise and dust created by the track's use were a nuisance to that area of the community. Planning commission originally granted a three-month temporary conditional use of the track while establishing several "conditional uses" for its operation. Despite complaints from neighbors, the three-month permit was extended until last August. At that time, the planning cop- mission revoked the permit 4 non-compliance of the conditional uses for which it was allowed to operate. A new permit request was made last month and the operator said he had "solved the existing problems and that he would maintain better control of the track operation." Last week's meeting was attended by nearby property owners own-ers who again complained of the noise, dust and traffic hazards connected con-nected with the operation of the '. track. Included among the protestors was Charles Black, who farms near the site. A former planning commission com-mission member, he said that he had previously voted in favor of the track but that the operator had not complied with conditions set forth at that time. Mr. Weaver explained to the planning commission that there is a need for such a facility because there is no other facility of this kind anywhere in the area. He said that many mountain bikers bik-ers and ATV riders are illegally riding rid-ing on the city streets or ripping up the foothills, creating serious erosion ero-sion problems. ' 1 "Let's solve some of this problem prob-lem by cooperating with the operation opera-tion of my track," he told the commission. com-mission. But the planning commission decided de-cided not to allow the reopening of the Syracuse track. |
