Show Cold Veather Eases Flood Threats Along Two Rivers i The report came to us Tues-f Tues-f day that the Duchesne River was down two feet and tnat Uie waver is oeginning to clear. This is, of couise, due to the cool weather of the past several days What might happen should ihe weather turn sucl'denly warm and assume the temperatures temper-atures normal for late May and early June is pretty much to be guessed at. Duchesne has been pretty weU stripped of its shade trees, which have been cut to reinforce rein-force the diking along the river. It has been reported to us that in some Utah flood areas even giant pine trees' in parks wera sacrificed in an effort to stem the gushing streams. -. The Strawberry River incident inci-dent has robbed us of several bridges. The bridge at the southeast south-east end of town on the old Myton road which is used now by oil well traffic, was sacrificed sacri-ficed last week, but was anchored an-chored for replacement when the stream recedes to normal. Luckily, all bridges on Highway High-way 40 were left undamaged Residents along the Strawberry Strawber-ry have been marooned since the disaster. It is reported that Clarence Baum is building a new route into town from his home on the south side of the river, to enter the highway im-mediatly im-mediatly on the other side oi the bridge just west of town. Mrs. Rita Bates, Strawberry correspondent for the Record, was in town Tuesday for the first time since the catastrophe. She said that she had trekked over the hills north of their ranch to catch the school bus on the highway two miles away a feat that her children had performed per-formed each school day for three weeks. The location of these homes on either side of the river, necessitated ne-cessitated their crossing the stream twice before reaching the highway. These bridges were washed away, leaving the many families in the area to find new routes into town a feat which will likely prove long and toilsome. In the absence of the bridge on the Indian Canyon highway, a detour road is being constructed con-structed which leaves Highway 40 on the other side of the first bridge west ot town and going south to the canyon highway. The state with its heavy equipment equip-ment is doing all possible to make this a feasible temporary route It is hoped that this route I will be ready for travel by Decoration Dec-oration Day as the city at present pres-ent is cut off from the city cemetery. cem-etery. Mayor Otto Johnsen states that every possible effort is being be-ing made to expedite construction construc-tion of a bridge and thp paring par-ing of the torn-up highway so travel may be resumed over the original route in the very near future. |
