These public forests also furnish food and shelter for nearly one-third of all the big-game animals in the United States and for many, many thousands of fur bearers, game birds and waterfowl. water-fowl. They are truly a Realm of the Wild. With the exception of a few game preserves, all 181,000,000 acres of national forests are open to hunting and fishing under the fish and game laws of the states in which they are located. Last year, over 10,000,000 visits were made by fishermen and hunters from every state in the Union to enjoy their favorite sports in these forests. Wildlife is a renewable resource re-source just like grass and trees. Accordingly, the Forest Service works closely with the state fish and game departments to provide better fishing and hunting for the many people who love these outdoor out-door sport9. As America's population popula-tion increases and working hours become shorter there will be ever greater demand for hunting and fishing on the national forests. In marking the 50th Anniversary Anniver-sary of its establishment by the American people, the Forest Service Serv-ice of the U. S. Department of Agriculture urges every American Amer-ican to take a greater interest in the protection, development and wise use of the national forests which belong to all the people. |
