Show "News Bits About Yester-Years" 5 YEARS AGO Lawrell Jensen was elected president of the Roosevelt Lions Club June 29, at the club's annual election meeting. Elected to serve with Mr. Jensen Jen-sen were Howard Ivory, first vice-president; vice-president; Louis Jensen, second vice-president; John Blaine, secretary-treasurer; Homer P. Edwards, Lion tamer; R. V. Larson, tail twister; Ken Aycock and Gordon Harmston, two-year directors; and Vere Johnson and Alva Snow, hold-over directors. Retiring president pres-ident Hank Swain, became past-president past-president director. Seven boys, four from Roosevelt Roose-velt High School, and three from Alterra, will represent Basin Post No. 64 at Boys' State July 10-22. They are Lynn Bracken, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Bracken, Ballard; Douglas Phillips, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Phillips, Bennett; Robert Chapoose, son of Mrs. Connors Chapoose, Fort Duchesne; Du-chesne; Richard Hurley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Emerson Hurley, Roosevelt; Ted Nelson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Nelson, Montwel; Eldon Winterton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Van Winterton, Roosevelt; and Allan Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Smith, Roosevelt. The first commercial recordings1 to be made by Tex Ross and his Rhythm Wranglers 'Deep in Blues" and "Contented Bachelor," words and music by the maestro himself are now on the market. Tex is a local boy, who owns and operates the RW Ranch dance hall 'just east of town, McKinlay Motor Co. will transfer trans-fer operations July 8 from their Main Street location to the building build-ing erected during the past year by Hollis G. Hullinger, and now housing Mr. Hullinger's Buick agency, ag-ency, according to Doug McKinlay, McKin-lay, co-owner of McKinlay Motor. 10 YEARS AGO Aldon Carroll, Altonah, Utah, recently acquired a registered Hol-stein-Freisian bull from the herd of George H. Anderson, Richmond. Pvt. Richard D. Olsen arrived home Friday, June 29th, to spend a 10-day furlough here with his wife, Rose J. Olsen and daughter, Rosanne. Pvt. Olsen was inducted into the Infantry division of the U. S. Army February 9, 1945 and has completed his basic training at Camp Roberts, California. BERLIN The veteran Second Armored (Hell on Wheels), division divis-ion of the American Army deployed de-ployed in the suburbs and the first American soldier entered the Russian-held center of Berlin Tuesday, Tues-day, July 3. A red-skinned hero of the U. S. Army jeeped down Unter den Linden Lin-den and women wept with joy at the sight of the American. - Pvt. First Class Harvey Natch-cess Natch-cess of the Ute Indian Reservation at Ft. Duchesne, Utah, who wears a Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart with Oak Leaf cluster, clus-ter, was the first American soldier to enter the center of the capitol. Mrs. Bennie Schmiett and Mrs. Parley Rawlings accompanied Miss Wilma Wogec, Duchesne County's Bond Queen to Salt Lake City. 20 YEARS AGO Duchesne County School Board held their regular monthly meeting meet-ing July 2. The principal business transacted during the day's session ses-sion and one which has taken considerable con-siderable study by 'all the board members, was that of the transfer trans-fer of ' the district headquarters from Duchesne to Roosevelt. The change has been considered for a number of years past and the motion for the change-over was placed at the regular meeting a month ago, but was tabled by President Floyd Lamb until Tuesday's Tues-day's session, in order to allow more time for consideration. Office equipment will be moved to Roosevelt Monday of next week. July Fourth will be celebrated at Iron Springs on Brush Creek Mountain under the auspicies of the Vernal Gun Club, in the nature na-ture of a sportsmen's riot. Twenty-five hundred persons, including high public officials, participated Friday, June 28, in colorful ceremonies marking the breaking of ground on the $1,500,-000 $1,500,-000 Moon Lake reclamation project. |
