Show & SCHOOL (US Our Visit to the Roosevelt Stan-ard Stan-ard Newspaper Office Our class was studying about how people used to print newspapers news-papers in the early days, and about Benjamin Frinklin's first printing show. It was very interesting, in-teresting, so we decided to visit the Roosevelt Standard. When we got there Mr. Cliff Memmott told us how Midge Memmott gathers up all the ladies' news and then writes it down on a piece of paper to check. He told us who gets the other news and how they get it. He then took us in the back room and showed us the linotype lino-type and what it is used for. They work it something like a typewriter only it is big and harder to work. They use it to put the letters together on lead, then they ink the letters and print a copy on a piece of paper to see if it is correct. After they check it, proof read, they put it in columns to print in the newspaper. He showed up how they cut the lead "pigs," how they make the picture plates, and finally print the paper, four pages at a time. He told the names of the people peo-ple who work there and what their jobs are. These people are: Cliff Memmott, . editor; Phil Pack linotype operator; John Gale, advertising salesman and printer; Orlando Rachele, printer; print-er; Midge Memmott, society editor. ed-itor. Now we can all better understand under-stand the amount of work it takes to print our local newspaper. news-paper. It is really a big job, which requires a lot of accuracy in' getting the true facts, to the people of our area. Good English Eng-lish use is a must here. These people truly serve their community. com-munity. We sincerely express our appreciation ap-preciation to Mr. Memmott and the workers for letting us go through the printing office of the Roosevelt Standard. Connie Hansen & Gale Ottosen Lucky Thirteen, Roosevelt Elementary. Friday, April 9, was a big day for Mrs. Harrison's first grade. They have been waiting and watching for the time when they could present the assembly program. They had such a long time to wait, because their's was the last student assembly for this school year. But at last the day came. When the curtain rose, there sat thirty-two children ready to beat out a lively toy band rhythm. The program was called "Fun with Dick and Jane." There were 4 units corresponding to the units in their primers Fun for Sally, Fun With Pets and Toys, Fun at the Farm, and Fun With Our Friends. The children tried to show some of the different things they did in the first grade to have fun. They felt that the day was a big success, and hope that the audience was pleased, too. |
