A packed Union High gym saw a pair of basketball games that were as close as basketball can get Saturday I- : Leading Scorers M MEN Squires (Vernal 3rd) 51 Grant (Duchesne) 36 Broadhead (Duchesne) ' 35 Simpson (Duchesne) 34 Richens (Vernal 3rd) 25 Brady (Duchesne) 21 night as the three-night tourney came to a close. Maeser First ward was forced into an extra period before they were able to beat Jensen for the Explorers and then only by the faint 23-22 23-22 score. The regular game ended 20-all. The smooth working and high - scoring Utahn - Duchesne team that represented the Duchesne Du-chesne stake, were favorite to win the title and the trip to the All-Church tournament that opens March 2nd at the B.Y.U. fieldhouse, but the Vernal Third ward, Uintah stake winners, win-ners, had other ideas. The Durhesne stake team was definitely off on their field goal shooting, especially Rex Broad-head, Broad-head, who couldn't buy a field goal until he finally hit one in I the fourth quarter from way out. He and Venoy Davies, who are great scorers, missed drive-in drive-in and lay-up shots that ordinarily ordinar-ily are cinches for them. The inability in-ability of the losers to make their shots and the top playing of Squires and Grant Richens were two handicaps that broke their backs. Sportsmanship Winners Not all the glory was won by the Vernal team, who were awarded a beautiful trophy as the winners, as the Duchesne team was adjudged the team showing the best sportsmanship during the tournament. They received a beautiful trophy for this distinctive honor. -The Roosevelt ward Explorer team won the sportsmanship trophy in that division. An all-star team was chosen for the two groups, with the Duchesne team rating three, places on the first team and Vernal Third the. other two in the M Men division. Six men were also placed on the second team. In addition to being selected as center on the all-star team, Squires was named the most valuable player in the tournament. tourna-ment. He scored 51 points for high in this category. Richens was the other Vernal member selected on the first team, and was chosen for the forward position po-sition along with Lloyd Grant from Duchesne. Leo Brady and Rex Broadhead were the unanimous un-animous choices for guard spots on the first five. The second team was composed com-posed of Erl Simpson, Duchesne; Wayne Thomas, Albuquerque; Clark Roberts, Myton; Raymond Hatch, Vernal; Steven Worth- ington, Albuquerque and Morton Mor-ton Brotherson, Mt. Emmons. Virden Vincent, Jensen forward, for-ward, rated the most valuable player award in the Explorer division and a place on the first team. Others were Doyle Murray, Jensen; Wayne Pope and Laird Johnson, Maeser, and Mark Nielson, Roosevelt ward. On the second team were Drew Bellon, Ballard; Billy Caldwell and Doyle Murray, Jensen; Kenneth Ken-neth Ashby and Danny McKee, Maeser. Tourney To Continue Presenting the championship trophy to the winning M Men team was Joe Wood, of Salt Lake City, director of Division 14. In making the presentation, Mr. Wood complimented the sponsors of the tournament, and assured the group assembled that if enthusiasm continued at the same rate, Sub-division B would always have the tournament tourna-ment and a team would go from here to the All-Church classic. The sportsmanship trophy was presented to the Utah-Duchesne team by Hollis G. Hullinger, president of the Roosevelt stake, hosts to the tournament. Directing the arrangements were members of the Roosevelt stake YMMIA, George Hacking, superintendent; E. Floyd Ross and Anthone B. Christensen, counselors, and other members of the stake board. The four Uintah Basin stakes contributed dance numbers each night for floor shows between halves of the games. This activity added greatly to the success of the affair. |
