Show Cougars Lose Two, Win One !n Class T Classic Playing in their first', high school basketball tournament, the Cougars from Union High school won one and lost two games in the annual Class "B" Classic that occupied four days of last week and saw a new champion crowned Spring-ville's Spring-ville's Red Devils and a long list of individual stars selected. For at least three members of the Cougar team their lone victory, a 41-31 win over Cedar Ce-dar City, was sweet revenge. Ken Nickell, John" Benson and Norval Hanson were members of the Roosevelt Rough Riders last year that were beaten the first night of the 1951 tournament tourna-ment by Cedar. Their first assignment was a tough Salina team,, and the Cougars made a ball game of it all the way until they lost their pair of acesKen Nickell and Gwen Bodily via the personal foul route. After Union's two six-footers left the game, the rangy North Sevier team poured it on and won hands-down, 47-26.- The second night they drew ' the red-suited Cedar team and I for three quarters the contest was a nip and tuck affair. But in the final quarter, the speed and alertness of the Cougars took its toll of the slower Cedar five, and Coach Glen Allred's lads' made a great impression on the fans as they tucked away the South Utah team 41-31. Their third day's assignment was the team which basketball critics and sports writers had ' picked as the team to beat for the 1952 title the Wasatch Wasps, who Saturday night won the consolation title after having hav-ing been eliminated the first night by the new champs from Springville. The Wasps from Heber City, displaying superior height and inspired basketball, trounced the Cougars 48-31. and then went on to beat Snow from Ephraim Saturday for consolation conso-lation title. After their first night defeat, sportscasters agreed the Wasps played the most inspired ball in the tournament. tourn-ament. Union's failure to last the full course of the tournament was not without its compensating compensat-ing features Ken Nickell and Gwen Bodily each were accorded accord-ed honorable mention on the Deseret News all-star teams, and Nickell received the same honor hon-or by the Tribune. Ken was also al-so among the top scorers as ha hit 35 points in three games to give him a 12.5 average. Of the ten boys whom Allred took to the big show only four are seniors. Lost for next year will be Gwen Bodily, Brent and Marion Morrill and Norval Hanson. Han-son.
