Building of the research center cen-ter on the campus will have many advantages for the university, uni-versity, according to Louis Buchman, Vice President of Kennecott Copper Corporation and should enhance the prestige of the University's College of Mines and Mineral Industries. Kennecott's research personnel will be available for student seminars on technical subjects. Commny officials added that the structure will be of a type that will be in. keeping with the beauty and dignity of the camtius. When fully staffed, the research re-search center will emplov an-porximatelv an-porximatelv 50 people and it is-' expected that most of the staff , will be Utahns. I The nw research center will . . engaee in basic studies relsting j to mineral recovery problems i of all rif Kennecott's Western i Mining Divisions. In addition to i . the Utah Copper Division, these include operations in Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. It is also expected that a regular part of the laboratory's work wi'Jl be investigation of the treatment of ores and minerals from many parts of the world in connection with Kennecott's expanded exploration activities. In addition to the laboratory facilities, the new center will have pilot plant equipment in which laboratory results can b-? verified on a iarger scale. Company officials feel that the research center's work can be done to better advantage by divorcing di-vorcing it entirely from regular production problems. In charge of the laboratory will be S. R. Zimmerley. who recently resigned re-signed from the Bureau of Mines to become Director of Research Re-search for Kennecott's Western Mining Divisions. Ashton Evans and Brazier, architects ar-chitects and engineers, are" designing de-signing the new structure. In the meantime, one of th barracks-tyne buildings at the university has been moved to a location near the ,CoHfe- of Mines Pid Minerql' Industries and will he used for temnora'-v quarters. Research work in the temporary building will begin as soon as the structure can be remodelled and the initial equipment installed. After the new research building is fin- . ished, the remodelled and improved im-proved temporary structure will be vacated and will be available for use by the University. |
