Show Roosevelt Fetes Ute Athletes At Monday Dinner Seventy-seven individuals joined in the annual Roosevelt Chamber of Commerce honor banquet, at which winning athletic . teams from the Ute Indian Tribe recreation recre-ation program were special guests. The award dinner was held Monday Mon-day night at the Frontier Grill Cafe, with W, S. (Bill) Murdock, Chamber president, presiding. Climaxing the dinner was the presentation of trophies to the basketball and boxing winners, and individual medals to team members. Acting as master of ceremonies and present the awards was Fancis Mckinley, director of housing for the Ute Tribe. During the dinner, the Junior American Legion, baseball team that represented the Ft. Duchesne Post during the 1954 season was given awards under the direction of Wm. Sutteer, past Utah Department De-partment commander. Certificates and a $5.00 cash prize were presented pre-sented to Indian children who had maintained a 100 attendance at elementary school the past year. ' Miss Phyllis Joan Quitchapoo, only Ute Indian girl to graduate from Union High School, was honored when she received a $5Q cash award from the tribe. In his preliminary remarks, Mr, Murdock expressed the pleasure of the Chamber of Commerce for the opportunity of recognizing these young people and their leaders for the fine progressive movement in stimulating recreation recrea-tion for the Indian people. He assured as-sured the leaders that it was the desire of the City of Roosevelt to cooperate with them inall progressive pro-gressive endeavors. |
