Show Accidents Claim Lives Of Two in Week Of Tragedy Believed Recovering, Victim Of Hunting Mishap Dies2 Babe At loka Drowns In Irrigation Canal TRAGEDY struck hard at the Uintah Basin this week, claiming claim-ing the lives of Darwin Thomas, 14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Dave Thomas, of Duchesne, and Lorin Grant Carruth, 20-month-old son of Mrs. Genavieve Webb Carruth, of loka. - Darwin Thomas, the victim of a hunting accident at Duchesne last Sunday, died at the Roosevelt Roose-velt hospital at 3 a. m. Wednesday Wednes-day although he was believed to be on the road to recovery. The Carruth baby was drowned in an irrigation canal, Tuesday about 5 p. m. at the home of his grandfather, Edmund Webb, of loka. 1 i i DARWIN. THOMAS was accidentally acci-dentally shot through the stomach stom-ach and a kidney at the close of a magpie hunt, Sunday evening. eve-ning. Young Thomas and a companion, com-panion, Conrad Hollenback, 16, 'were unloading cartridges from I their .22 rifles when the acci-'dent acci-'dent occurred. Believing that a shell had been ejected from the Hollenback boy's gun and fallen in the grass, they were searching search-ing for it when Hollenback's rifle discharged. The bullet struck Darwin Thomas in the stomach, nicked a kidney, and lodged in his back where surgeons later removed re-moved it without difficulty. He was rushed to the Roosevelt hospital hos-pital by Sheriff Arzy Mitchell and Dr. L. D. Hamilton, of Duchesne. Du-chesne. Monday morning his condition was reported as fair, and according ac-cording to physicians and hi3 father, further improvement was evident on Tuesday, despite the seriousness of the wound. At 8 p. m. Tuesday his pulse was reported, as good and his temperature tem-perature not alarming. His death, which occured without with-out warning at 3 a. m. Wednesday, Wednes-day, may have been due to the formation of a blood clot, according ac-cording to attending physicians. Darwin J. Thomas was born at Duchesne, October 16, 1933, a son of David and Ruby Mayer Thomas, and was a student at the elementary school in Duchesne. Du-chesne. His father is a deputy state game warden with the Utah Fish and Game Department. Besides his parents, Darwin is survived by a brother, Elwyn, 17, of Duchesne; his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas, Duchesne; and two great-grandmothers, Mrs. Mary Ann Mayer, Heber City, and . Mrs. Aldura Merkley, Duchesne. . Funeral services will be conducted con-ducted Friday, May 28, at 2 p. m. in the Duchesne LDS chapel. r LORIN GRANT CARRUTH, Tuesday evening's victim of an loka irrigation canal, had been playing on the lawn and around the house of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Webb. He was last seen by his grandmother at about 4:45 p. m. and at 5 p. m. his absence was noted, and a quick search of the yard was immediately began, but without success. Attention was then directed to the canal, where he was found lodged in a pile of trash at the bottom of a drop in the canal about 100 feet from a bridge from which, it is believed, that he fell. At the Roosevelt hospital, where he was rushed by his grandfather, two' physicians attempted at-tempted to revive the 20-month-old youngster, but to no avail. It is believed that he may have been dead upon arrival at the hospital. Lorin Grant Carruth was born, September 9, 1946. at Roosevelt, the son of the late Phillip Lorin and Genavieve Webb Carruth. The babe's father was killed in a mine accident at Bonanza, February 8, 1946, one month after his marriage to Genavieve Webb. Besides his mother, Lorin Grant Carruth is survived by hk maternal grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Webb, of 'loka and his paternal grandfather, David Carruth, of Vernal. Funeral services will be conducted con-ducted Saturday, May 29, at 2 p. m. in the loka LDS ward chapel. Friends may call at the Edmund Webb home from 10:30 a. m. until 1 p. m Saturday. |
