Show Business Houses Affirm Wednesday Afternoon Closing THE Wednesday afternoon closing of Roosevelt business houses, to become effective June 2 and continue to September 1, was virtually proclaimed Tuesday Tues-day afternoon. Basis for closing is contained in a petition, bearing bear-ing the signatures of 50 representatives repre-sentatives of local firms, and cased in the following terms: "For and in consideration of mutual promises and benefits, we the undersigned businessmen and citizens of . Roosevelt, Duchesne Du-chesne County, State of Utah, do hereby agree to close our places of business and cease our regular working operations Wednesday afternoon of each week from 1 o'clock p. m. for the balance of ' the day; the first afternoon of closing to be Wednesday, the 2nd day of June, 7,948, and to continue con-tinue for the summer until, and including, September 1. 1948. "Cafes and Service Stations to close at least one afternoon each week, but to be free to chose the day on which they are to close, the same to be by agreement agree-ment with other Cafes and Service Ser-vice Stations." i i i AN afternoon closing of business busi-ness houses one day in 'each week has been periodically discussed dis-cussed among local merchants for several years. The decision to bring the matter to a head and present it for the consideration of Roosevelt businessmen was reached at a recent meeting of the several Bishops of the Roosevelt Roose-velt stake, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Accordingly, Ac-cordingly, Bishop Ilollis G. Hul-linger, Hul-linger, Roosevelt ward, and Bishop Bish-op E. J. Nixon, Roosevelt Second ward, were named, with Paul Nelson, Stake MIA superintendent, superinten-dent, to draw up and circulate the petition. Indications are that it will be submitted to the city council with the suggestion that it be enacted into an ordinance. According to the Roosevelt Stake Bishops' committee, the Wednesday afternoon closing has been planned, primarily, to provide a regular mid-week holiday hol-iday for employees of Roosevelt firms. The committee is also taking steps to bring about a change in the schedule of the Uintah Basin baseball league to substitute Wednesday afternoon play for Sunday games. |
