Show Utah Dairymen Advised To Expand Herds LOGAN Utah dairymen this week were urged by Lyman H. Rich, USAC extension dairyman, to expand their herds and increase in-crease production efficiency to meet current and future demands de-mands for dairy products. Efficiency Ef-ficiency of dairying1 has not kept up with that of many other farm enterprises, he said. "With our rapidly increasing population there are more customers cus-tomers for dairy products than ever before," he pointed out. "Because of higher incomes, there is also a much higher rate of consumption per person than previously. Yet there are fewer cows to meet this increase. There has been a loss of nearly a million mil-lion cows during the past year," Rich said. The current dairy situation may be summarized as follows: 1. Compared with other farm enterprises, dairying is a good long-term business. 2. We do not have enough cows and heifers to produce the milk we need, 3. The feed situation is improving. improv-ing. 4. Livestock numbers in all categories are down. 5. Human population is increasing. in-creasing. y 6. Demand for milk and dairy products exceeds the supply.A shortage of milk and dairy products pro-ducts is in prospect if conditions do not improve, he said. |
