Show Youngster Escapes Death As Home Burns At Altonah A fire believed to have been started by a child playing with matches, completely destroyed the home of George Carroll and came dangerously near to claiming claim-ing the life of one of the Carroll children, at Altonah last Friday. Mrs. Carroll and her two small children were at home alone when the blaze started. The mother was busy in the kitchen when she smclled smoke from an adjoining room where the youngsters were playing. She in-vestigated in-vestigated immediately and found a clothes closet in flames. Mrs. Carroll removed the children to safety and was returning re-turning to the burning room with a bucket of water when she discovered that -Joan, one of the children, had gone back into the smoluj filled house. She abandoned her plans to fight the fire and entered the dwelling in search of the youngster. Unable to locate her in the mounting' flames and increasing smoke, she was leaving the house when she stumbled over the child who had succumbed to the fumes and was lying unconscious un-conscious on the floor. Mrs. Carroll and Joan were rushed to the Roosevelt hospital where they were treated for minor burns and shock and released re-leased Saturday. . 1 The fire was seen by a neighbor, neigh-bor, Clifford Clark, who ran' for help. But the house was too far demolished to be saved by the time aid arrived. |
