Show Utah Firms Found , In Violation of Child Labor Law Employment of under age min-t min-t ors is still prevalent in Utah. :'t : was announced today by John I R, Dille, regional director of the Wage and Hour and Public Contracts Con-tracts Divisions, U. S. Depart-; Depart-; ment of Labor, in the eight Western West-ern states. The fiscal year report shows violations of the child labor sections sec-tions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (Federal wage and hour law) and the Walsh-Hcaley (public contracts) Act were uncovered in nearly 20 per cent of the Utah I establishments inspected during I the twelve months ending July Director Dille said. "The Federal wage and hour law prohibits employment of children under 16 years old in manufacturing or processing occupations, oc-cupations, or in rooms where manufacturing or processing is being carried on," he added. "It also bans employment of children under 10 years old in occupations declared to be hazardous, haz-ardous, including such jobs as driver or helper on motor vehicles, ve-hicles, in logging or sawmilline operations, coal mining, operating operat-ing nower-driven wond-working machinery and operating power-driven power-driven hoisting apparatus, including in-cluding elevators. "The Walsh-Hcaley Act, which applies to firms supplying goods or materials to the Government on contracts exceeding S1 0.000 prohibits a boy under 1G nr s girl under 18 years old from working on such goods." - |
