Show Ashley Forest Reseeding Project Termed Successful The 400-acrcs burn on Farm Creek mountain which was re-seeded re-seeded last year to crested wheat, smooth brome, timothy and orchard or-chard grass is one of the most successful reseeding projects yet initiated on the Ashley National Forest, asserts Ona A. Harrison, forest supervisor. A tractor or horse-drawn seeder seed-er drilled the seed into the ash bed soon after the fire occured. About 8 pounds of seed was sown per acre. On rocky areas, the seed was sown broadcast and followed up with a Dixie harrow. Hand broadcasting was used in extreme rocky places. Because of the favorable moisture mois-ture and climatic conditions, germination of seed was very satisfactory on' all sites. A plan to control-burn 600 acres of adjacent ad-jacent depleted sagebrush range and reseed by the same method is under preparation. in many cases n is iuuuu umt control burning is the cheapest method of eliminating sagebrush. Adequate fire lines and ample protective assistance is provided to determins that the fire is confined con-fined to the unit to be reseeded. Before control burning occurs, an approved plan of action is followed fol-lowed and advantage is taken of favorable weather conditions, states Mr. Harrison. |
