I J . .r - . .4. ,-. :.--o.A:uiK .'::... .v -r The United States Navy's mighty 45,000-lon battleship, the U S S Missouri, will end her World War II career in a blaze of glory, Sept. 2, 1945, in Tokyo Bay, when she serves as the scene of the historic unconditional surrender of Japan to the United Nations. Proudly bearing ihe name of ih home slate of President Harry S. Truman, the fighting U S S Missouri has been named by General Gener-al of the Army Douglas MacArlhur, Supreme Allied Commandeer, as ihe locale of ihe formal ending of ihe war in ihe Pacific. Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimiiz, Commander-in-Chief of ihe United Stales Pacific Fleet and Pacific Ocean Areas, will sign for ihe United Stales. General of Ihe Army MacArlhur, for ihe Allied forces which foughi in ihe Pacific. The U S S Missouri was launched January 29, 1944. Consiruction was ordered June 12. 1940. Her keel was laid on January 6. 1941. at the New York Navy Yard. |
