Show University Student Writes Interesting Bird Thesis Utah game bird hunters who have long killed pelicans, corrncr-ants, corrncr-ants, and blue herons in the la. terest of game fish life in the state must revise their huntsman's code to conform to the latest scientific findings on the subject as contain-ed contain-ed in "Bird Rookeries of the is! lands of Great Salt Lake," mas ter's thesis of William H. Behle recently approved by the department depart-ment of zoology at the Unlversltv of Utah. ' By analysis of the stomach content con-tent of more than a hundred of these birds, Mr. Behle has shown that their prey does not consist of game flsh as the average huntsman hunts-man has been taught, but of slow-moving slow-moving fish, principally carp and suckers. Mr. Behle obtained his Information Informa-tion from the islands of Gre&t Salt Lake, the only authentic source of such Information in Utah. The California seagull, the heroic bird of early Utah history, along with the blue heron, the 1 1 Lli. .. nui niuraui,, uuu me wmie pelican makes its home only on Bird island, is-land, Gunnison island, Egg island and White Rock island, far from harm either by man or predatory animal. The paper also describes the nesting and feeding hablta of these fish-eating birds. The lack of any kind of plant or animal life suitable for feeding on thesa Islands has driven these birds to fresh water lakes of Utah within a 150 mile radius of their habitat for their food. They make dally flights to these feeding grounds according to the author's study. The thesis, 108 pages in length, is profusely illustrated and covers many interesting phases of bird life among fish-eating birds. Oa the strength of his thesis and his outstanding work in the field of ornithology, Mr. Behle has been awarded a research fellowship in the Museum of Vertebrate zoology at the University of California, according ac-cording to Dr. Ralph V. Chamber, lin, head of the department of zoology zo-ology at the university. - The thesis is not yet available to the public.
