Show Once again the best fishing through Pavson Canyon because fiehinn nre,,r- XmmJ Once again the best fishing waters In the Central Region lor this year's opener will generally be the larger reservoirs and lakes. Most streams will be unfit for fishing because of high, swift ana muddy waters. MANY WILL be at or near flood condition and for safety reasons should be avoided. Some will be planted If conditions permit. per-mit. Strawberry and Deer Creek reservoirs will be good and Utah Lake and Yuba Reservoir, two popular year-round waters, should provide fish for the creel. American Fork River - This stream will probably not be stocked prior to the opening because of high water conditions. At best it will be difficult to fish. The upper reaches of the stream will be inaccessible because of deeD snow. Big Cottonwood Creek - Big Cottonwood Cot-tonwood Creek will be one of the better streams In the Salt Lake area. It will probably be stocked for the opening with rainbow trout. Camping areas will be available in the lower part of the canyon. Burriston Ponds These popular Juab County waters always draw a large crowd. They have been stocked and will again produce good rainbow trout flshina for the opener. Camping areas are available around the ponds. Christensen's Pond - This water, located east of Moroni in Sanpete County, will be planted with rainbow rain-bow trout and will draw a good crowd of local area residents. Limited camping spots are available. City Creek - This stream should draw a targe crowd for opening day. If high water conditions subside, it will be stocked with rainbow trout. Access Is good, but snow still remains in the upper reaches of the canyon. Overnight camping is prohibited along this stream. Clover Creek - This small stream will be planted with 10 to 12 Inch rainbow trout for the opening day. Those who know this stream should also catch browns up to a . foot long. Limited camping areas are available. Cox's Pond This popular Sanpete San-pete County water has been planted with catchable sized rainbow trout and should provide fast fishing for the opening weekend. This will be a good water for kids to fish. Daniel's Creek - Because of high water, this small stream will not be planted until sometime after the opener. Once planted, it provides good fishing In its picturesque pic-turesque canyon setting. Deer Creek Reservior - Fishermen Fisher-men should find good fishing from the shore and from boats on this popular reservoir. Rainbow trout up to 16 inches will dominate the creel; but brown and lake trout, largemouth bass and yellow perch will also be taken. Several large brown trout in the "trophy class" are taken each year. The water In the reservoir should be iust right for the opener. Wallsburg and Rainbow bays will be the best shore fishing areas. Shoreline access Is good and limited, undeveloped camping camp-ing areas are available. Diamond Fork - This stream may not receive a plant of rainbow trout prior to the opening because of high and muddy water. Even without stocking, this water should produce good catches of brown trout in those areas where it can be fished. Fairviow Lnkot . Vnn uulM hnu in twoll on this one! Deep snow " drifts will block access to these and other high Mantl Mountain lakes. Goshen Creek - This small stream near the town that bears its name has been stocked with rainbow. Water conditions are good, as is access. Hobble Creek - Flood conditions exist along this popular stream at the current time. Watersheds that this stream drains have wav above average snowpacks and will cause high water in Hobble Creek for several weeks. When it lowers, good browns will be taken. Rainbow will also be planted. Little Cottonwood Creek - High, swift, treacherous water will make this stream one you might want to pass up for the May 31 opening. Fishing will improve as water drops. It will not be planted for the opening. Mantl Canyon - Success will probably only be fair on this stream due again to high water. Planted rainbow trout from 7 to 9 inches will be taken with a few larger carry-overs from last season. Mill Creek - This water usually draws a large crowd for the opening, but this year, because of high water and near flood condition, condi-tion, we suggest passing this one up. Snow conditions exist in the upper parts of the canyon. It will be planted when the water levels begin to drop. Nebo Creek - Again, high water will not make this a good bet for the opening. It will receive a plant of rainbow after the high runoff subsides. Rainbow, brown and cutthroat are taken from the stream. Nine-Mile Reservoir Located iust south of Manti, we are predicting this water will be a good to excellent bet for the opening, especially from boats. Planted last fall with advanced flngerlings, rainbow up to several pounds will be taken with '2 to 34 pound fish the rule. Camping areas are sparse. Palisade Lake - Excellent camping camp-ing facilities are located around this Sanpete County water with State Park facilities available. The good crowd that is expected will find rainbow up to several pounds being caught. The lake lies northeast of Sterling. Payson Lake This lake will not be planted prior to the opening. The Payson Canyon road remians closed due to construction The Santoquin Canyon route will provide access as soon as it opens, with chances of it opening prior to May 31 not good at the present time. For those able to reach the lake, fishing should be good with carry-over fish from lost year. It will be planted as soon as the Santaquin Cavon rood opens. Provo River - The Provo River above Deer Creek Reservoir in Wasatch County is very high and turbid. Much debris Is floating in this swollen stretch of the river; and since water conditions will probably get worse belore getting get-ting better, it might be best to pass this section up on the opening. open-ing. On the other hand, the river below Deer Creek Reservoir should provide good catches of both brown and rainbow. Something new this year on the lower Provo is that the dam downstream to Vivian Pork will be classified as a "wild trout stream" where only naturally reproduced fish from the stream will be caught. No longer will this stretch of the river receive planted fish. This section of stream will veeld some nice catches, but fishing probably won't be as fast as In the areas on down the canvon where planted rainbow will be caught. Access along the entire lower Provo River Is excellent ex-cellent with good camping areas available. Red Lake - Like Payson Lake, this water will be inaccessible through Pavson Canyon because the road has been closed. Possible Possi-ble access may be through Santaquin San-taquin Canyon or via the Pavson Canyon gas line trail. Fishing for rainbow trout will probably only be fair. Sanpitch River - This year-round flshina water Is high and still rising. ris-ing. It will not be planted, but If fished deep with natural bait (crawlers), it should yield some large browns, brook or rainbow. Settlement Canvon Reservoir -This reservoir should be the best opening day fishing water in Tooele County. A good population of rainbow trout Is found along with a few large browns-one caught last year tipped the scales at 13'2 pounds. It has been heavily planted and a large crowd Is expected. Keep In mind that no boats are allowed on this water. Sevier River - If you want to fish a stream where therre is a good possibility of catching several kinds of fish, this may be the one you are looking for. The stretch of river below Yuba Reservoir will be planted with rainbow. Additionally, walleye, largemouth bass and large yellow perch may also be taken. Good camping areas are available availa-ble at Yuba Reservoir State Park. Silver Lake - This beautiful, high mountain lake in Big Cottonwood Canvon near Brighton is questionable ques-tionable for the opening. It will not be stocked. Snow banks will still be present with lots of running run-ning water around the lake. Ice may still be on the lake.too! Silver Lake Flat Reservoir - This picturesaue water will not be accessible ac-cessible for the opening due to deep snow. Soldier Creek Reservoir This new reservoir, built as part of the Central Utah Project, is located in eastern Wasatch County downstream from Strawberry Reservoir. It was heavily planted with small rainbow trout over a year ago and should provide good fishing on the opener. The rainbow will generally run In the 10 to 12 Inch category. No camping facilities are available; and because of late runoff, the limited shoreline camping spots will be muddy In most areas. The Strawberry River below the dame is not open until July 1. Strawberry Reservoir - The opening day status of this popular water is uncertain at the present time. Strawberry Valley has had auite a winter! Deep snow and thicker-than-normal ice cover on the lake has pushed spring back further than normal. The lake will probably be open, but snow drifts will still dot the area. The large crowd will find camping areas limited around the shoreline because of high water, and most areas will still be wet. Fishing should again be good to excellent, with rainbow and cutthroat trout finding the creel most often. Remember that a six-fish limit is in effect on this water, and all tributaries to the reservoir ore closed until July 1. Thistle Creek - High, turbulent water will make this water unsuitable un-suitable for planting prior to the opening. As the water flow decreases, fishing success for good populations of rainbow and brown will increase. Tibbie Fork Reservoir - Heavy fishing pressure and good success suc-cess are expected on this north Utah County water. Planted with rainbow trout in the 10 Inch class, this water should produce lots of fishing for the family. Brown, brook and cutthroat trout will also be caught. An occasional larger-than-average brown Is taken (one 10 pounder last year). This reservoir reser-voir Is filled to capacity and is spilling. Limited camping areas will be available down canyon. Town Reservoir and Twin Lake -The outlook for these southern Sanpete County waters in Twelve-Mile Canyon is good to excellent fishing for the opening. Both have been stocked rainbow trout, also larger rainbow rain-bow will be taken. There is a good access road Into these waters. Camping areas are available around the reservoirs. Utah Lake - Most people pass up this popular year-round fishing water on the opening weekend of the general season. But for those who want to catch fish (catfish, white bass, largemouth bass and walleye) and have lots of room to themselves, this may be the water they are looking for. Most popular areas are at Lincoln Lin-coln Beach, Provo Boat Harbor, Orem pier, Saratoga and the Knolls. developed and undeveloped, are available. Vernon Creek This small stream will not receive a plant of rainbow trout for the opening, but good brown trout fishing should be found on the creek above the reservoir. Camp sites are found along the stream. Willow Creek (North and South) High water necessitates predicting predict-ing a slow opener on these two Tooele County streams. Unless water conditions change prior to the opening, they will not be stocked. Fair populations of brown trout are found. Yuba Reservoir Here's a sleeper! If better known, more people would be lured to this spot on the opening. Good populations of rainbow trout, walleye and large (up to 2 pounds) yellow perch are found In this year-round year-round fishing water. Located south of Levan on Highway 91, good camping is available at the modern State Park. A fair opening Is expected expect-ed for the 1975 fishing season in the Southeastern Region. Many waters above 9,500 feet will probably be inaccessible for the opening, thus concentrating fishermen on lower waters. Blanding Reservoirs No. 3 and No. 4 - Catachable rainbow trout have been stocked already with both waters having good carryover. carry-over. Access Is good via paved roads. There are no camping or toilet facilities at either reservoir. Boats and motors are prohibited on Blanding No. 3. Boulger-Benches Reservoirs -These waters will not be stocked for opener and success may be poor. Access may be limited to Fairview Canyon. Cleveland Reservior - Opening day access looks doubtful to this water which had approximately five feet of snow in the middle of May. It definitely will not be stocked until June. Cottonwood Creek - Water flow in this stream should be very high; but near Joe's Valley Dam, it should be fairly clear. Success is expected to be fair. This water is stocked only with brown trout; however, some rainbows will be caught near the aam. Electric Lake - This water is closed for the 1975 fishing season. Ferron Creek - This creek will be very high and turbid. Success will be poor. Ferron Reservoir - Heavy snow drifts and muddy roads will make this water inaccessible for the opener. Gooseberry Reservoir - Access to this water is doubtful for the opener. It will not be stocked, but does have a natural population of cutthroat. Huntington Creek Proper (Above Electric Lake) This water is closed for the 1975 fishing season. Huntington Creek - Forest Boundary To The Fork - This high and turbid creek will definitely defini-tely not be stocked until after the opener. Huntington Creek -Left Fork -This water will be inaccessible for the opener. Huntington North Reservoir - The reservoir was stocked with fingerling rainbow last year, and anglers can expect 12 to 15 inchers on the opener. Success should be fair with heavy pressure. pres-sure. Access Is good with limited camping areas. Johnson Creek - This water should be stocked with catchable rainbow before the opening. The road should be dry for the opener. The nearest campgrouna is at Red Bluff, but no improved facilities are present. Joe's Valley Reservoir This water should be a good place to visit on the opener with good fishing from both boat and shore for pan-sized rainbow. To add to the trip, there are no access problems; and camping facilities are good. Lasal Mountain Lakes - It is doubtful if many roads will be accessible for the opener. The higher lakes will be frozen until mid-June. Beaver Lake and Medicine Lake - These lakes will probably be Iced over until mid-June and will not be stocked until the ice melts. Blue Lake and Dark Canyon Lake - The road to these lakes will probably be closed until mid-June. Don's Lake and Hidden Lake - The waters should be accessible for opening weekend. They have been stocked with catchable rainbows. Expect heavy pressure. pres-sure. Oowah Lake The road has been blocked by heavy snow and if it remains so, this lake will not be stocked for the opener. Lower Fish Creek - This water will be accessible, but waters should be high and muddy. A good population of natural brown trout is present. Lowry Creek This water is expected ex-pected to be high for the opener and will not be stocked until after the runoff. Millers Flat - This water will be inaccessible for opening day. Millsite Reservoir - Access to this water is good. The road is dry and a new oil road is being constructed cons-tructed from Ferron. Camping facilities are limited, but there is a concrete boat ramp. Fishing should be good for rainbow trout. Fishermen are asked to either give colored tags on fish they catch to a wildlife officer of-ficer or place them in tag boxes. Monticello and Foy Lakes Mon-ticello Mon-ticello Lake should be clear of ice tor the opener. Catchable rainbow rain-bow trout will be stocked. Both lakes usually provide a good carry-over of brk trout. The access ac-cess gravel road is dry. Camping facilities are limited at both lakes. |
