Show Proceedings at UEA Meetings Summarized In accordance with a rsquest by the Review, Principal Lyean Johnson John-son cf the Pleasant Grove Junior High School and retiring member of the L'EA Board of Trustees, has prepared the following brief summary of the proceedings of the recent annual Public School Teachers Teach-ers Convention. The program of meetings for the 59th annual UEA Convention included in-cluded four general sessions, four section meetings and 50 subject matter groups. The calendar included Oct. 11, 12 and 13 and all three days were crowded with important activities for the teachers of the state. At the opening General Session, Clint Pace, executive assistant to the president of the Houston Post, and director of the White House Conference on Education for President Presi-dent Eisenhower, delivered the opening op-ening address on the subject "Educations "Edu-cations Partnership." He reviewed the entire pattern of the Conference, Confer-ence, giving the reasons for its organization and the activities engaged en-gaged in. He was very specific in stating that the most good that came out of the study was the good accomplished in each local school district, where citizens of the area got together and reviewed their own school problems. Mr. Pace too particular pains to point out that the entire Conference agreed with the principal of Federal Fed-eral Aid to Education. He explained explain-ed that the controversy came In the area cf how much and how it shouM be distributed. The second general session was given over to the problem of how to bring the various levels of education edu-cation closer together. That is, the university, secondary and elementary ele-mentary levels. Dr. William H. Cornog- and Dr. Roald F. Campbell Camp-bell led out in this discussion, and a panel of interrogators helped to clear and bring out dscussion on various points. According to many teachers the high light of the convention was the address at the third general session, by Dr. Ethel J. Alpenfels, professior of Education at New York University. She is a nationally nation-ally recognized authority on social behavior. Her discussion made clear, to her listeners the Importance Impor-tance of the various divisions of our society; the family, church, and school in dealing with youth, and their effect upon the child's social behavior later in life. She had a delightful presentation and her discussion was very informative. inform-ative. Dr. Ralph W. McDonald, president presi-dent of Bowling Green State University, Uni-versity, Bowling Green, Ohio, spoke at the final session at which new officers of the association were presented to the membership. They include Dorothy Zimmerman, teacher tea-cher in the Salt Lake City system; James Macfarlane, first vice president, pres-ident, and Milton Johnson, Milton Nielson and Bee Roberts, as members mem-bers of the Board of Trustees. Retiring members of the UEA Board include Lyean I. Johnson, Forrest H. Green, Omar M. Hansen Han-sen and Wesley P. Larsen. |
