Show Utah Symphony Readies for Season's Concerts Conductor Maurice Abravanel will hold the first rehearsal for the 1956-57 Utah Symphony season on Wednesday, Oct. 24 and the first subscription concert of the season will be held at the Tabernacle on Wednesday, Oct. 31. Rise Stevens, glamorous New York Metropolitan Metropol-itan soprano, will be guest artist for the opening; concert. This will be Maestro Abravanel's tenth season as conductor and musical mu-sical director of the symphony and leaders predict it will be the best. The orchestra personnel will be practically the same as last year with Harold Wolf, concertmaster, returning along- with other principle prin-ciple players. The lone exception will be Harold Schneier, principal cellist for the past three years. David Freed of New York City has been signed as principal cellist and will arrive here just before the opening- rehearsal. Guest artists, in addition to Miss Stevens, will include: Zara Nel-sova, Nel-sova, world's leading- woman cellist; cell-ist; Dorothy McGuire, movie and television star; Predell Lack, violinist; vio-linist; Clifford Curzon, British pianist; pi-anist; Mischa Elman, one of the world's greatest violinists and Utah's own pianist, Reid Nibley. Ticket sales have been unusually brisk but good seats are still available avail-able in all sections, according to David S. Romney, managing director. direc-tor. Season ticket holders this year will receive a bonus ticket to the Nutcracker Ballet at no extra cost. Tickets may be secured at the Symphony office, 55 West First South,, in Salt Lake City. The orchestra will present concerts con-certs all over the state as in past seasons. |
