Show VIKINGS REGION VI9 CHAMPS FOR THIRD STRAIGHT SEASON Don Hales poised his trusty toe up went the pigskin and through the uprig'hts. The referee raised his arms and for three years in a row, the Vikings were the Kingpins King-pins of Region VII. Of course no one knew it at the time, not even young Mr. Hales or his valiant teammates; but that one point after touchdown, when the game was only 7 plays old, proved to be the margin of victory. The game ended 7 to 6 and with the victory goes the right to play in the State Class B semi-finals on or about Nov. 15. The game itself was a rugged affair, with the Lehi Pioneers keyed key-ed tighter than a fiddle string, and providing by far the toughest opposition encountered by the Battle Creek Boys in league play this year. The day was cold with a frigid north wind blowing most of the time. That cold fingers played their part in the final score was Shown by the numerous fumbles, particularly partic-ularly by the Pleasant Grove team. Several potent scoring drives went into reverse when someone dropped the football. Paul Allen, Viking all-state fullback, full-back, collided with a Lehi player during the second quarter and left the game with a painful hip injury. in-jury. Reports Tuesday morning were to the effect that the injury was not too serious. The scoring plays in the game, there being only one for each side, were as follows: Two plays after the kickoff by Lehi, which opened the game, PI. Grove had possession of the ball on the Lehi 9 yard line after a go;d run by Allen around left end. Robert Walker packed the ball ,'i yards to the Lohi 6 and then Paul Allen went 5 through the line to the Lehi one. Paul Gillman went over and Hales kicked the extra point. Score P.G. 7, Lehi 0. Lehi's only successful scoring dtive started near the end of the first quarter and culminated early in the second. Pleasant Grove was penalized 15 yards for illegal use of hands, which set the Vikings back to the P.G. 10. Paul Allen fumbled and a Pioneer recovered on the P.G. 9. A Lehi back carried to the Viking 5 and Felt added a yard to the P.G. 4 as the first quarter ended. After the short rest, the I'hi fullback went over for the six-pointer. six-pointer. The remainder of the g;ime was marked largely by defensive play and sporadic offensive drives by both teams which were nullified by fumbles and misplays due largely large-ly to the cold. The way things look at this writing. writ-ing. Pleasant Grove will play the winner of the Moab-Dixie quarterfinal quarter-final game which is scheduled for Nov. 8 at Moab. If Dixie wins, PG will meet Dixie in the semi-finals at St. George. Tf Moab wins, Moab will travel to Pleasant Grove for the semi-final. In either event the game will be nlayed on Friday or Saturday. Nov. 15 or 16. The definite da'e will be agreed upon by the two sohools concerned. |
