Show Irrigation Companies Approve Plans For Storage Reservoirs American Fork, Lehi and Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove Irrifation Companies accepted ac-cepted the preliminary water stor- age and flood protections plans for the American Fork watershed at a meeting of the three compan- ies last week, reports Leo Harvey, of the Alpine Soil Conservation District and spokesman few the Irrigation Ir-rigation companies. Fred R.asmussen, Soil Conservation Conserva-tion Service, presented the details of the proposed structures. These include a flood water retarding and sediment storage reservoir at the Tibbie Fork site in American Fork Canyon. A similar but smaller structure struc-ture is proposed in Dry Creek at a point near the present Provo Reservoir Canal syphon. This structure will have the additional feature of equalizing peak flows from Dry Creek so as to minimize the irrigation problems. The tentative design for both of the above structures provides capacity to hold water from a "100 year frequency" flood. They are also designed to store the expected sediment from the drainages above for the next 50 years. They are not designed for permanent storage stor-age of water. Much smaller structures are tentatively ten-tatively planned for Battle and Grove Creeks. These structures will have much less stoi-age capacity, ca-pacity, but they will provide sufficient suf-ficient flood water storage to avoid breakage of the Provo Reservoir Canal at these locations. The Silver Lake Flat Reservoir is tentatively designed to store approximately ap-proximately 930 acre feet of irrigation irri-gation water. It will also have some flood protection value. The Silver Lake Flat has been considered con-sidered for water storage on previous pre-vious occasions. The operation and life of these structures will depend on the 'amount of vegetative recovery from upper watershed treatment, stated Mr. Rasmussen. The proposed American Fork small watershed project provides a program of land treatment for the upper watershed areas along with flocdwater protection work in our canyons. The Forest Service Ser-vice and the Soil Conservation Service Ser-vice are working with us in the development of a suitable work plan, stated Mr. Harvey. |
