Show Vocational School Sets Up Courses for Driver Education The -Central Utah Vocational School has recently set up a Driver Education course for the purpose of educating teenagers and adults alike in driver safety. In connection with this Driver Education program, an advisory committee has been set up to assist as-sist the instructors and administration adminis-tration of the school in carrying out the program. The committee members were chosen from various fields in connection with driver education so as to be able to offer valuable assistance with the program. The committee is made up of Jessie Evans, Provo Police Chief; Ralph '(Dick" Chappie, Utah County Sheriff; Melvin Grant, Sgt. of the Utah Highway Patrol; Sister Sis-ter M. Janine F.S.P.A. of St. Francis School; William Ward, Assistant to the Juvenile Judge; LaVar Kocherhans, Chief Deputy of the State Drivers License Division; Dr. John Cmokovic, BYU High School; Sherman Wing, Assistant Superintendent of the Provo School District; Bruce Ashton, County Safety Co- ordinator; Sherman' Lawman, Utah State Automobile Association, Associa-tion, and Professor Robert Goff, University of Utah teacher trainer train-er for driver education. The advisory committee have selected as their officers William Ward, chairman; Bruce Ashton, vice chairman; and Lynn Asay, secretary. At the fir.it meeting of the committee a proposed course of study for I he driver training program pro-gram was submitted. The course of study includes three phases of instruction ; 1. the classroom phase, where texts, films and filmstrips will be utilized to instruct in-struct the students; 2. the Drivo-trainer Drivo-trainer phase, where Drivotrain-er Drivotrain-er units set up in the classroom will be operated by the students; to teach them the manual operation opera-tion behind the: wheel, and 3. the dual oontrol oar phase, where the students will receive' their actual driving practice. Three members of the committee commit-tee were assigned to lay out the route for the driver trainers in the Provo area. Lynn Asay, LaVar La-Var Kooherhans, and Bruce Ashton Ash-ton will decide on a route which will include all types of everyday every-day driving situations. Much emphasis is being placed on driver training improvement for adults as well as for teenagers teen-agers and the program is just getting underway. All those interested in-terested in this driver training program anticipate a visit in the near future from Dean R. Cook, vice president of the Missouri Driver Education and Safety Association, As-sociation, who will assist in further fur-ther organizing and improving the driver education program. |
