Show VIKINGS TROMP A.F. 27-0 IN LEAGUE GAME Pleasant Grove's Vikings made it two in a row in local games when they larruped American Fork 27 to 0 last Friday night before a huge crowd at the P.G. ball park. The impressive win over the Fork-ers Fork-ers was for keeps, since it was the first league game of the 1956 season. As predicted in last week's Review, Re-view, the Alger Boys were a far different aggregation than the team which nosed out the Orem Tigers on Sept. 14. The local players play-ers not only looked like the B-Champions B-Champions of last year; but they played that way. Tackling was sharp and vicious and the blocking was far different from the hit and miss brand displayed during the Orem game. Chronologically, events of last Friday night happened about as follows: The teams battled on practically even terms from the opening whistle until near the end of the first quarter. Paul Allen returned a Caveman punt to the A.F. 30 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Gene Carson went off tackle for the first touchdown. Don Hales took a bad pass from center and his kick for the extra point was wide. Score P.G. 6, A.F. O. .To open the second canto, the Vikings Vi-kings kicked off to American Fork and held the Cavemen to downs. On the second play after the A.F. punt, Hal Lewis, on a double reverse re-verse from the American Fork 30, went 70 yards to score. Extra good blocking was responsible largely for the Lewis gallop to pay dirt. Don Hales kick was good and the reckoning showed P.G. 13, A. F. O. In the same quarter Allen got loose for a 50 yard run and on the next play Lewis carried over from the 16 yard line on an end run. Hale's conversion kick was good. Score at half-time, Vikings 20; Cavemen O. In the third frame th"e teams fought it out on relatively even terms for the first five minutes. Then P.G. launched a sustained drive and with Carson, Lewis, Allen and Kenny Merrill lugging the ball the Battle Creek Boys pounded to the Forker's five. Allen went up the middle to score and Hale's conversion kick was good again, making it 27 to 0 in favor of the home team. From here on out Coach Alger swept his bench as clean as a rain-washed street. Every player got into the act, but the Cavemen were held to the lone goose-egg throughout; never getting closer than the Viking 35. The game endV ed with Pleasant Grove in possession posses-sion of the ball near the center of the field. On the offense Lewis, Allen, Carson and Merrill looked best. Defensively De-fensively it was Carson, Pack, Buckner and Lewis. It's on to Nephi tomorrow for the Alger Boys for a game with the Juab Wasps. The game, as announced an-nounced by school officials, will get under way at 3 p.m. |
