Chevrolet Trucks for 1959 Show Many New Improvements and Are Now. on Local Display Substantial fuel savings in -the light-duty range, larger brakes on the half -ton series, a new optional option-al 'power train for 14 heavy-duty models and durability improvements improve-ments from engines through axles are the top developments in the expanded Chevrolet truck line foV 1959. The model lineup is increased to 139 'three more than last year on 22 different wheelbases. Gross vehicle weight ratings range from 4,000 'to 36,00(5 lbs., with the sedan delivery increased to 4,900 pounds from 4,100. The 1959 line includes 96 conventional, convention-al, 22 low-cab-forward, 8 forward for-ward control, 6 tandem-axle, and 5 school bus chassis models in addition to the sedan delivery and a new luxury pickup to be announced an-nounced later. Generally, the popular, nuas-sive, nuas-sive, functional styling of 1958 is retained, with a new two-tone pattern for Fleetside pickups. Cab interiors are restyled with a wider choice of brighter trim available. Light-duty feature for 1959 is a six-cylinder engine of improved design which has shown substantially substan-tially better gas mileage in on-the on-the job tests. .Fuel savings, plus an increase in torque at low and medium speeds, comes from a camshaft design that reduces loss of fresh fuel mixture during the combustion cycle. On the half-ton models even further fuel economy econ-omy is attained from a special oarburetor-rear axle combination, optional with the economy six. Rear brake shoes and linings are widened on 1959 half -ton units un-its to provide 167 square inches of braking surface an increase of 10 square inches. The new brake design also assures better cooling. More load space is furnished on ton stake models with a longer rack body which measures 98 inches on the inside or seven inches in-ches more than last year. The new optional power train for 14 of the 70 and 80 series 2V-2 ton trucks results in up to 12 per cent greater pulling power and greater efficiency in a wide range of hauling operations. Teamed together are a 185-horse-power 348 cubic inch V8, heavier clutch, a close ratio five-speed or Powermatic transmission, and a 16,000 pound single or a 30,000 pound tandem rear suspension. Added to Chevrolet optional offering of-fering this year is a manual five-speed five-speed close ratio transmission. Its closely stepped shift pattern gives top performance in highway high-way hauling. Including the economical six, Chevrolet truck power plants for 1959 total nine three sixes and six V8s. In addition to the two new close-ratio five-speed units, there are seven other manual and automatic transmissions. Among important mechanical revisions contributing to durability dura-bility and performance in Chevy's 1959 trucks are: A new thermostatically-controlled by-pass cooling system for all heavy-duty truck engines, providing a more rapid warmup, uniform temperature distribution and constant circulation. Refinements in engine pistons, valves, oil filters, bearing seals and distributors. Oil sealing and bearing seating improvements in the 15,000-pound rear axles. Greater driveline efficiency and reduced wear with a design that affords maximum protection a-gainst a-gainst water, dust and other foreign for-eign matter. |
