Show Red Cross Committee Makes Report Marking the close of six months of very interesting and successful Red Cross activity, the following report sent to national headquarters headquar-ters and to the Utah county chapter chap-ter at Provo is now submitted by General Chairman Harold S. Walker and by M. S. .Christiansen, secretary-treasurer, secretary-treasurer, so that those who have supported this vital organization so generously may know what is being accomplished locally, and how the funds are being spent. Eighty-nine volunteer workers have given free service. Ten of these are executive officers: Harold Walker, chairman of first aid and disaster relief; Lucile H. Walker, vice chairman and head of roll call and war fund collection committees; com-mittees; M. S. Christiansen, secretary-treasurer; Calvin Swenson, assistant as-sistant treasurer; Mrs. Lela Banks and Mrs. Thelma Freeman, chairmen chair-men of knitting and sewing; Mrs. Laura Robertson, home service director; di-rector; Mrs. Arvilla Harvey, junior Red Cross; Mrs. Martha Peterson, publicity chairman; Thomas Walker and Harold Smith, first aid instruction. instruc-tion. Thirty volunteer workers composed com-posed of ward committees who did exceptional work in collecting membership mem-bership and war fund contributions. Chairmen of these committees were Nine Hink, first ward; Ora Thorne, second ward; Amanda Wadley, third Ward; Alberta Walker, Lindon; Ezra Swenson, Manila. Forty knitters have turned in nearly 100 sweaters, and 65 more are nearly completed. These are being be-ing sent to the armed forces. The eight sewing volunteers have sent in eight complete layettes for refugees and 10 pairs of trousers. Ten women have received certificates certifi-cates in home nursing, 10 more are completing a course in first aid. Sixty-six first aid certificates ha' vts 'been gi tinted to m&i of this community who have completed the course given to volunteer firemen, policemen, teachers and civilian defense de-fense workers. Another, class has nearly finished the course. All of these people will be ready to serve in case of disaster, accident or war emergency. Students of the junior high school and central school are enrolled in junior Red Cross work. They assisted as-sisted in the war fund drive. Girls of the junior high group are making layettes for the local branch emergency emer-gency supply closet. They are being be-ing taught by Miss Deone Olsen of the home science department of the school. One local famly was given financial finan-cial relief during a period of prolonged pro-longed illness with attendant ex-horbitant ex-horbitant hospital and medicine bills. Two ex-service men were assisted and three soldiers at army camps were given furlough when death in family made such action advisable. These cases were handled by the home service department. A recreation room for the sold-diers sold-diers at the TJ. S. sub air base here has been furnished by the local branch of the Red Cross with the jhelp of the Utah county chapter. Radios, games, tables, easy chairs, couch, ash trays, lamps and rug were contributed by civilians. |
