Show Snow Cover Above Normal On American Fork Watershed If you've looked up toward Timp-anogos Timp-anogos this winter and remarked: "Nice storm we're having," you were right, because the snowfall and water wat-er content measurements taken by Thomas A. Walker reveal better-than-average conditions on the American Fork canyon watershed. An ample water supply for farmers, farm-ers, and better range conditions during dur-ing the coming year are practically assured, with snowfall to date more than twice that of last year to the same time. The survey taken by Mr. Walker, national parks ranger at Timpano-gos Timpano-gos cave, shows that at the four stations the snowfall and water content con-tent are better than the seven-year average, by about 25 per cent. This is virtually the only watershed in the state which is above normal. The highest survey station at the Timpanogos Divide. There the snow is slightly more than 52 inches deep, compared to 20 inches last year and a seven-year average of 34 inches. The snow contains a little inches, and the average is about 35 inches. The water content was measured at better than 12 inches, compared to 5 inches last year, and 9 inches average. At the South Fork Ranger Station Sta-tion the snow depth was measured at nearly 36 inches. At this same station last year there was 13.5 inches of snow, and the seven-year average is 22 inches. The snow contains con-tains 8 inches of water, compared to 4 inches at the same time last year, and 6 inches average. Last year at the Timpanngos Cave camp, the lowest point where measurements meas-urements are taken, there were only a few patches of snow, and the water wat-er content was not measurable. This year, there is nearly 18 inches of snow at the Cave Camp, containing better than 4 inches of water. This is compared to the seven-year average aver-age of 10 inches, containing 2.5 inches inch-es of water. Hydrologic readings at Timpano-gos Timpano-gos Cave camp and the loop divide show an accumulated precipitation of 30.08 and 17.11 inches of water, respectively, since October 1. Last year the accumulated precipitation was 6.67 inches and 11.55 inches, respectively. more than 14 inches of water, more than twice that of last year, and compared to 11 inches average. The next lower station is located at Altamont, where the snow is 45 inches deep. Last year there was 20 |
