Show Main Street Project Wins Federal Approval Bids May Be Called Soon On Highway 91 Revision Through American Fork Federal approval of the project for widening Main street and Highway 91 through American Fork has been given by the U. S. Bureau of Public Roads, Mayor O. DeVere Wootton has been informed by the state road commission. Only a few matters of right-of-way remain to be worked work-ed out before the project will be ready to go for bids, and it is likely that the way may be cleared to start actual construction in the spring. Word of the government's approval ap-proval of the highway revision plan is welcome news in American Fork, especially since the project has had a rather stormy history. Originally proposed more than two years ago, it was advertised for bids one time but cancelled when government engineers en-gineers declared it was inadequate. The project, which originally contemplated con-templated the widening of only the section of highway in the business section, was then enlarged to include in-clude the full length of Main street on which the highway is routed. The improvement is expected to cost in the neighborhood of $85,000. The project consists of widening the street twelve feet, by setting back the curb and gutter six feet on either side. The highway resurfacing re-surfacing will be done with federal and state funds, and the curb and gutter construction will be taken care of by the city. The highway revision is expected to eliminate the traffic problem created by the use of the' same street for a state highway and a city business street, a problem which has become more serious with increased automobile traffic. It is the opinion of business men and city officials that by-passing American Fork would be detrimental to the city, and through their efforts and cooperation the plan for remodeling remodel-ing the present highway has been pushed to a successful conclusion. The improvement is expected to take care of present and future traffic requirements on the street. Q |
