The conquest of Mount Everesl has long been the ambition of moim tain climbers, but thus far has re sisted even the most elaborate ef forts to scale its dangerous slopes The Intense cold and rarefied atmosphere atmos-phere encountered on the climb make It extremely hazardous, and the rugged contours add to the perils. It has only been within a few years that the Tibetan monks have permitted anyone to attempt the feat. Fears that the gods would be angered by the Intrusion of white men were the reasons given. |
