Show President's Ball Big Success at American Fork The United States Wednesday night was a dancing nation. Throughout the length and breadth of the land many thousands of dancing danc-ing parties were held, commemorating commemorat-ing the 53rd birthday of the nation's na-tion's president and united in the humane cause of raising funds to aid victims of infantile paralysis. American Fork was one of the many towns and cities to join in the mammoth mam-moth birthday fete. The dance held here was well attended, and al- though the ticket committee had not fully checked a substantial amount will be assured. The high school band directed by K. J. Bird gave a short concert preceding pre-ceding the dance, which was followed fol-lowed by the president's greetings over the radio. Rulon Nicholes sang, I "Home on The Range," a favorite of the president, accompanied by Ho- ward Paxman, and Judge George S. Banff of Provo, gave a short talk. The remainder of the time was spent in dancing. President Roosevelt, in his message, mess-age, expressed his gratitude to one and all who so generously contributed contri-buted to the funds raised to combat this dreaded disease. Seventy per cent of the proceeds of each dance will go to local needs and the other 30 per cent will go to a national committee to be allocated by this committee for research work. The president expressed his happiness at having his birthday the occasion for this cause. During the dance a huge birthday cake baked and decorated by Fred Cheever, local baker, was auctioned off and swelled the fund in thei amount of about $15.00. The cake was beautifully decorated in patriotic patrio-tic colors and symbols and bore the president's initials and a replica of the Warm Springs Foundation. The cake went to Willard Cleghorn. Flags decorated the hall and a large picture of President Roosevelt was conspiciously displayed. S. T. Shelley, general chairman of the birthday ball, and the members of the committee are to be commended com-mended for the manner in which the party was put over, and extend their thanks to all who helped make it a success. |
