Show BEVERLY HILLS, Calif -Well all I know is just whet I read la the I papers, or what I see here and there i3f Back home here y after a kind a hurried prowl I! back East. I ,i,c started In here a lii week or so ago. r;in I was to go East iii nt tour o'clock on 'jW the regular plane, ;,,r and my good uio friend Jimmy Doollttle had asked mo about a j,,ri week previously If I (Hilont ivo to ride East with him; that he was '1 Roing to make a trip In a new plane ', , and so when 1 got to the Hold here was his plane. He was going to leave , V In one hour after our plane was. Well 1 did want to go with him. l knew "",'! he would really "Burn Oil," hut I was headed for South Bend, linllann, ""! where 1 had promised to speak at '"!' Notre Dames annual Football Din- ! ner, for my good friend the Coach, 1 Elmer Layden, and Father O'Hara. ' Jimmy told me he would after landing in New York fly me back to L South Bend, but I figured that was ' kinder imposing on him, so 1 dident ' do it. 1 sure wish 1 had been on that t trip. His wife was with him. 1 think '.T' they had it pretty cold and rough , too, and I would have perhaps "'i messed the whole thing up, so maby its just as well I dident go. Jimmy 10 ' is a great pilot, and 1 wouldent ha afraid to go anywhere with him. Well 1 went on and got to South ' s Bend by regular air line, and they did .,1,1,' have a great time, and a great din- JijS, ner. I like that school. I always have. !orr There is something mighty genuine about It. They turn out seme great V , men. ' 111011 We had .about twelve hundred to I there in one of their big dialng halls. Many an old boy in there that had s played during his time under the fom Great Rockne. My, what a heritage nie and tradition that man left. I had !fni been a friend of his for many years. l0 j 1 think this Elmer Layden is go- tissi ing to be a great Coach for them. I lj 1 tell you. he has the support of the may whole school, and Uk whole Alumni, Tl In his first year he lost two or three tcte games, but they dident do like lots !ie of places, jump 0" him and yell tor ;( his scalp. They knew that he had air made great progress, and were heart -yes and soul to give him a chance, a nm, real chance. He had em playing je mighty smart ball when they played ihov California out there last Fall. ,uio Did you know that School has no diet automobiles, no campus full of cars. There is books there. Oh its an odd - college! Had some great speeches at qp the dinner that night. You know these Priests are smart fallows and a lot of humor. One old boy from, lnm (1 think he had charge of the Chad- K"'' ties in Cleveland, Ohio) well he was a knock out. And Father Ollara Is '" an excellent talker. ,psi I had to leave rather early to catch of 1 my plane. 1 was headed from there "ln to Washington to attend the dinner "u given by the Vice Pres. to the Presi- " dent. 1 was there last year and we had a lot of fun, and the President said he had a lot of fun, and this year ' ,e was just as good. This little fellow Garner is a great s"? fellow, and smart. Say I would ra- t'1.- ther have his opinion than anybody. Inl; He dont say much, but. he knows which way the wind is blowing blow-ing every minute. They was all messed up over the gold, but seemed to think that no matter how the decision was rendered that they had some si-hemes to fix it so it would mn &. -$:"CX tin ;Vio-?ViK get by. There was only about 50 at a the Dinner. All the Cabinet and their jt wives were there, none of the second y string team were there that night, tl the ones they call the Brain Trust- n era. The Brain Trusters are not the fi. Cabinet; they are the advisers to the t. Cabinet. Dont hear quite as much of 3 i.hat bunch as we used to. but they a are still there and still cooking up f medicine. This Supreme Court has f kinder held thein up. They had all , kinder forgot about it, but now that , they find that those nine old men J with the Kimonos on are really alive, k why its got all Washington excited. , 1115 McNauehl Syndicate Inc. ' |
