Show Health Director Urges To Frotect Mountain Streams From Camp Contamination Lloyd M. Farner, M. D. Director HEALTH DISTRICT NO. IV "Our stream sources may be contaminated con-taminated this summer by campers, tourists, fishermen and others", is the warning given by Dr. Lloyd M. Farner of Provo, Director of District Dis-trict Four. "The independent camper, with his trailer or without, can be a most dangerous threat to the water supply sup-ply originating in high mountains and flowing through our canyons" says Dr. Farner. "He can camp wherever and however how-ever he pleases, drawing away from our main highways in many spots invisible to travelers or patrolmen. "He picks out the most attractive spot in sight, and almost invariably where sparkling springs are present or along streams used for culinary and drinking purposes. "Our forest areas are now provid- ed in some places with splendid facilities fa-cilities for these transients and campers. If campers could be confined con-fined to these areas our troubles would be minimized but there are hundreds of ideal camping spots not provided with proper waste disposal equipment or protected water supplies. sup-plies. "While It is quite true that most travelers are in good health, there are some who definitely are not, and who can tell them apart? Those who are a danger to health are carriers car-riers of many kinds of diseases from which our water supplies must be protected. "Another phase of the problem is that of protecting these travelers from themselves, which, in justice to the good reputation of the state, should be done. The state highway patrol and forest service have long ago signified signi-fied their willingness to cooperate with the State Board of Health on a plan to protect both traveler and our own citizens from this very definite defi-nite menace to health. |
