The top four teams from the tournament wil advance to Payson for the Central Utah District Tournament. 910th Grade Division In the 910th grade division, there was some minor juggling of the teams entering the tournament. The Jr Nam Boys defeated the Pistons 50-4- 4 to take over third place and knock the Pistons to fourth. Karren defeated the Jazz 61-5- 1 to claim seventh place for the tour-nament. The Ballhogs had a struggle on their hands but prevailed over the Bad Boys 39-3- The Homeboys showed why they're tied for first place handing the Hawks a 69-3- 9 loss. The first night of the tournament pitted the Jazz against the Bulls. The Bulls found their shooting eye finally and held off the Jazz 54-4- Jay Groves had the hot hand for the Bulls with 23 points. Bruce Robertson led the Jazz with 22 points. With the victory, the Bulls next opponent was the Ballhogs who defeated them 44-3- Colby Cook led a balanced scoring attack for the Ballhogs with 10 points. Shawn Stevens led the Bulls with 11 points. The Pistons held the Bad Boys to only six second half points in handing them a 44-2- 7 defeat. Derek Taylor led the Pistons with 13 points while Jared Urrutia and Dale Southam each had seven for the Bad Boys. The Jr. Nam Boys had little trouble with the Hawks handing them a 54-2- 8 loss. Nick Dorrick was high scorer for the game with 13 points for the Jr. Nam Boys while Troy Harris led the Hawks with 12 points. In the final game of the day, the Homeboys held off a rally by Karren to defeat them 45-3- Richard Livingston had a big day for the Homeboys scoring 19 points. Craig Veenker led Karren with 16 points. The tournament continued Tuesday evening after the paper deadline. The final games of the tournament are scheduled for Wednesday beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Championship game is set for 8:40 p.m. that night. The Running Gouchos notched their first win of the season in handing the Warriors their eighth loss 51-4- 5 as both teams were looking to get out of the winless column. Richardson proved to be too much for Giles as they easily handled them 64-3- The Nam Boys had to struggle but came out on top of Martin 54-4- Phi Slamma Jamma completed a perfect season defeating the Sunbeams 50-3- In the first night of the tour-nament, the Running Gouchos faced the Warriors for the second straight game and again handled them 44-3- Jamie Bryant and Steve Johnson led the Gouchos with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Case Thornton led a balanced Warrior attack with eight points. By defeating the Warriors, the Running Gouchos got the op-portunity to face Phi Slamma Jamma in Saturday's first game. Phi Slamma Jamma rolled over them 50-2- 8 to advance in the win-ners' bracket. Brook Blackhurst had a big second half to lead Phi Slamma Jamma with 15 points. Steven Johnson again led the Gouchos with 10 points. In the second game of the day, Giles pulled away from a two point halftime lead to defeat the Sun-beams 40-2- 6 and will now face Phi Slamma Jamma in the semi-final- s. Greg Roper led a balanced scoring attack for Giles with nine points. Darrin Livingston led the Sunbeams with nine points. In the closest game of the day, Scott Flinders hit four free throws in the last minute to lead Richard-son to a 51-4- 7 victory over the Penguins. Flinders ended up with 21 points for the game to claim high point honors. Cory Warburton led the Penguins with 12 points. In a rematch of Wednesday's night game, the Nam Boys and Martin met again with the same results only a different score, 45-3- Shawn Chipman led the Nam Boys with 12 points while Brett Tolman was the game's high scorer with 14 points for Martin. The Vikes who finished fifth in Region 8, beat Jordan and lost to Pineview and Spanish Fork in the state 3-- A tournament last week. Vikings end season valiantly at state Pleasant Grove won one and lost a pair in the State Tournament last week in Ogden. In the opening round, the Vikes played the number one team from Region 7, Pineview, and despite a terrible night shooting free throws (11-22- ), PG was within three with two minutes left in the game. Pineview used full court pressure the entire game and both teams were bothered by turnovers but in the end, the quicker Panthers came out on top sending PG into the consolation round. Wednesday, with only 12 hours rest, the Vikes took on a huge Jordan team. The Beetdiggers only had 10 hours rest in a tournament scheduling goof only capable in the Utah High School Activities Association. PG jumped on top early, then held on down the stretch as David Flinders hit two free throws with :01 on the clock to boost the Vikes to a 62-6- 0 win. Friday night PG and Spanish Fork put on a great high school basketball game won by the Dons in overtime, 75-7- PG had chances to win the game in regulation and in the overtime but the shots wouldn't drop. Matt Smith scored a game high 33 points for Spanish Fork while Craig Hayden had 24 for the Vikes and Greg Grothe had 21 with Flinders scoring 19. The Vikes had three more field goals than the Dons but Spanish hit 16 of 24 from the line while the Vikes were converting 11 of 15. Spanish Fork went on to win the consolation trophy in the tour-nament while Pineview placed fourth. Seventh grade players eye future after learning season The Seventh grade Pleasant Grove Junior High basketball team was open for any seventh grader interested in learning basketball fundamentals. The team practices every Monday morning at 7 a.m. Coach Walker is very pleased with the talent in the seventh grade. The people who come out and learn and improve are the ones who usually make the school team in the ninth grade, the coach said. |
