The tax initiatives before Utah voters next week would be devastating to education, edu-cation, according to State PTA officials. offi-cials. They would go too far, way too far with serious effects upon the schools and the children of Utah and the pocketbooks of their parents. par-ents. Back in August 1988, there was overwhelming support for three initiatives that would shift the tax burden in Utah and play havoc with cities, counties, and the state. Schools would suffer the most by taking the largest cuts. Who wins? "Big Business" in Utah (minerals, transportation and utilities would save tens of millions of dollars in property taxes). The parents of school children chil-dren will get the squeeze by paying service and user fees for many services that have been previously provided with tax dollars. The State PTA took a stand for the children of Utah. Gayle Judd, Pleasant Grove, a former State PTA President, has been organizing organiz-ing PTA's throughout the State to help them work against the tax initiatives. Last Saturday every elementary school in the state was open to parents, teachers and volunteers vol-unteers to distribute material on the tax initiatives. Mrs. Judd stated the important message is Big Business in Utah presently pays 1.4 to 1.5 percent in property taxes and if capped by one percent by the passage of Initiative A, the savings would be enormous to those businesses. Many of the businesses have contributed to the defeat of the initiatives because they fear they will damage the economic growth in Utah. When parents began to realize that "Big Business" in Utah would save millions of dollars they began saying, "Hey, we are the ones who are being jerked around. We stan J to lose more in fees than we would ever save in taxes if the initiatives pass." PTA is taking this message to all their local units as they meet with parents and go door to door describing describ-ing the disasterous effects the initiatives ini-tiatives will have on the children of Utah. The estimated savings with the impact of Initiative A on the 15 largest companies in Utah is given below. |
