' ; Is 4 L 1 James Hurd, 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Hurd, was selected as the Pleasant Grove area Fireman For A Day. James spent Monday, Oct. 24, fulfilling his responsibilities as the temporary fire chief. Pleasant Grove Fire Chief Calvin Mills and Fireman Dave Vickers arrived at Valley View School, where James is a student, to pick him up a 2 p.m. Gloria Swenson, a member of the Firemen's Auxiliary who was in charge of the Fireman For A Day program, and Laurie Sorensen, her assistant, also were in attendance. They presented James with a real fireman's helmet for his very own. Then they drove to Anderson Park where a small fire was started in a pile of brush and James; was ; able to use the fire truck's hose to ; put out the blaze. He was then permitted to do a test of the fire pagers from the dispatchers office at the Pleasant Grove Public Safety Building. A fire prevention inspection at Beary Best Ice Cream was then his reponsibility. He told the owners that he would give them his approval ap-proval in exchange for an ice cream cone. He got the ice cream. Fire department officials took him to Pleasant Grove Junior High School where he got to use the powerful deck gun which is on the new fire engine. He was able to visit the Ambulance Ambu-lance Station and see the equipment equip-ment on the new ambulance. I That evening he had a chili din ner with the firemen and Mayor David Holdaway presented him with a special Fireman For A Day certificate during the fire drill. He was awarded a plaque which will have his name engraved on it Fire chief Calvin Mills, right, assists James Hurd, Fireman for a Day, in putting out a fire. along with last year's winner and then he presented it back to the fire chief. The plaque is kept permanently perma-nently in thefire station. Each year the winner's name will be added to this plaque. The Fire Chief For A Day program pro-gram marked the conclusion of the Firemen's Auxiliary's annual fire prevention education program in the elementary schools. About 3,000 entry forms for the j Fire Chief For A Day drawing were ! distributed in the schools. The children were asked to fill out the questionnaire on the entry form and return it to the city. James' name was chosen at random in a drawing held Monday, Oct. 24. The auxiliary has visited all six elementary schools in the Pleasant Grove and Lindon area. The junior high andhigh school will be done at a later date. Gloria said she wanted to especially espe-cially thank those from the auxil-! auxil-! iary who have helped with the fire prevention education. They include in-clude Chris Lloyd, Margaret Boren, Mary June Walker, Laurie Sorenson, Candi Scoville, and auxiliary aux-iliary president Annette Mills. She also thanked the firemen who have assisted, including Dave Vickers, Guy Fugal, Ray Newman and Chief Calvin Mills. Gloria also expressed gratitude to Brenda and Deanna Nielsen for their help. ' Gloria, past vice president of the 1 auxiliary, was asked to stay in charge of the program again this .! year. She thanked the principals of the schools for their cooperation and for having the schools set up ji and ready when the auxiliary arrived. ar-rived. ; She also thanked Carolyn Smith : j for handling the fire drill programs i - in the schools this year. |
