Vikings blast Bear River in playoff game On the first play of the game, Viking cornerback, Brandon Tayl-or picked off a Bear River pass to setup a Darrin Henry two-yar- d run t0 give PG a 7-- 0 lead in Friday's first round of the 3-- State playo-ffs, and PG went on to win 33-1- Taylor slipped in front of a Andrew Barrus pass in the flat and returned the ball 8 yards to the Bear River d line. PG drove to the 5 and went to the "power I" formation and with Henry followi-ng the blockers, scored in three plays. Jeff Swenson kicked the point after and PG appeared to be on their way to an easy victory. Early in the second period, a snap on a punt sailed over Russ Vandyke's head and the Bears took over at the five-yar- d line. PG's defense, lead by Lynn Green, the put Bears' back to the 10 but Barrus passed to Jason Watson to tie the score at 7-- Taylor quickly let the enthusi-asm out of the excited Bears by returning the kickoff 82 yards for a Viking touchdown, and Swenson's kick made it 14-- Barrus lead the Bears back into the lead with a touchdown pass to Brandon Ballard and then took the snap for an apparent point-afte- r kick and raced around the end for two points, making it 15-1- With time running out in the half, PG took over on their own 35 yardline and VanDyke hit Henry for 12 yards oi, a screen pass, and with 15 seconds remaining lofted the bomb to Taylor. The speedy slotback shot by the defender, hc--.i tated at the 1 1 to catch the ball and raced into the endzone to complete the 54-yar- d scoring play. The two-poi-effort failed but PG was on top 20-1- 5 at the half. Henry, who ran well from his fullback spot, added touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters and Swenson added another kick to end the scoring. VanDyke passed for 100 yards to go with 178 from the ground game, PG's offensive line of Brad Allen, Randy Mayo, Shaun Kearns, Mark Richards and Kevin Hullin-ger were effective in opening holes for Henry and backup tailback, Darrick Despain. Despain, just as he done earlier in the year, filled in for the injurred Chad Fraughton and did a fine job. Coach Bill Mikelson was not really pleased with the team's first half performance but was very happy with the win that puts the Vikes at home Friday against Jor-dan. The Beetdiggers traveled to Cedar City and beat the Redmen, 14-- 3 and will come to PG for a 6 p.m. game Friday night in Viking Sta-dium.
