Fraughton's score came with 1:33 left in the half. But Spanish Fork's Joe Aldredge took the short Viking kickoff, pounded into a crowd of Viking tacklers and appeared to be stopped. At least the PG bench thought he was stopped and the defense started onto the field only to see Aldredge pop out and race to the 14 yard line. A half the distance penalty on PG for having too many players on the field moved the ball to the 7. Reese Brunson hit Eric Smith with a touchdown pass and Grotegut's kick made it 14-10 at halftime. Fumbling on the first play of the second half, a mistake coaches fear as much as any, struck the Dons and Russ VanDyke recovered at the five to set up a Johnston run and extra point kick that quickly had the Vikes ahead 21-10. An unintentional onside kick following the score was recovered by the Vikes and at that point everything was going PG's way. However, the Dons maintained composure, held and forced PG to punt on a fourth and short situation. Suddenly the Dons got a break when the short 8 yard punt was taken on the hop in front of the PG bench and returned to the 20. Four plays later, Davis scored on a two yard run and the Dons were only down four. 21-17. To the delight of a big Homecoming crowd, the Vikes then put together two fourth quarter drives to ice the game. Johnston added another touchdown on a two yard run and Flinders scored his second touchdown as the Vikes controlled the ball for most of the final quarter. PG's defense allowed Spanish Fork just 40 yards in the second half. Fumble recoveries and two Burke Watkins pass interceptions helped blunt the Dons previously undefeated offense. "Watkins did an excellent job on (Eric) Smith and his interception in the end zone was a very big play for us," said Viking defensive coach, Darold Henry. PG rushed 61 times for 265 yards and had 59 yards in the air. Spanish Fork ran 26 times for 97 yards and added 41 in the air. The Vikes had 40 yards in penalties to 15 for the-visitors. Pg is 3-0 in Region 8 and travels to Carbon Friday night to play a surprisingly good Carbon team. In the junior varsity game, PG was a -21-14 winner as Russ Van-Dyke Van-Dyke directed the offense and Brandon Despain had a good day carrying the b all. Gary Llewellyn played well on defense for PG. The junior varsity does not play this week. |
