A motion penalty, ironically on Goodwin, nullified the score. During the fourth quarter, everyone on the PG team had a chance to play and Chipman and I Doug Willes recovered Don fumbles to keep the PG offense on the field. The win gives the sophs a 2 record and sets up tomorrow's game with Carbon at 4 p.m. in Viking Stadium. I Pleasant Grove took the opening kickoff and drove 65 yards to score and then went on to down Spanish Fork 22-- 0 in sophomore football Thursday. Chris Goodwin gained big chunks of yardage on the drive and at the 14 yard line, after a penalty on the Vikes, "Jug" Jacklin passed to Goodwin in the flat. The pass and catch were good for the touchdown and Quint Chipman kicked the extra point to give PG a 0 first quarter iead. When Spanish went on offense following the kickoff, they were aided by several Viking penalties, but a sound defensive effort stopped the drive deep in PG territory. Kelly Wilkinson, Mitch Davis, Justin Humble and Nathan Tatom made big defensive plays in holding the Dons. After taking over, the Vikes were forced to punt, but Alan Clark and Matt Bulkiey pounced on the muffed punt to give PG great field position at their own 48 yard line. On the first play following the turnover, Jacklin faked to Goodwin, pitched to Bulkiey, who rifled a pass to a "wide open" Clark Harris, who went 52 yards to score. Brandon Anderson, Viking pulling guard, gave Bulkiey an excellent block to buy time for the reverse pass play to develop. Again Chipman kicked the point afer and PG led 14-- With four minutes left in the half, Spanish Fork went to the air and Richard Livingston picked off a Don pass and returned it to the Spanish Fork 20 yard line. With Spanish on their heels, the Vikes went with a screen pass, Jacklin to Derrek Despain, and the used a Wilkinson block to race down the sideline into the end zone. Leading 20-- PG faked the extra point and Jacklin passed to Despain who made a leaping catch for the two points. Two plays into the third period, Goodwin broke loose up the middle behind Wyatt Smith's block and rambled 60 yards for an apparent r C ' ymm .mmm-- .ii. ., .., - it 4-- : - i i ' ''.I ! e 1 V Mike Smith (52), Justin Johnston (34) and Joe Taylor (64) lead the way as the Vikes return to the field at halftime and went on to beat Spanish Fork, 35-1- 7, Friday. (Photo by jj John Hill) k Vikings batter Dons in Homecoming spectacular js as Justin Johnston cranks ' out big yardage again k By JACK HILL t a pleasant fall evening with f; pretty Homecoming royalty, an outstanding halftime show by the rs. band, flag group and drill team, was topped off with a 35-1- 7 football win at PGHS Friday night. I Playing on a near perfect Sep-'"- i' tember night, the Viking football . team trailed 0 early in the first m period after Spanish Fork's Kell Grotegut booted a 31 yard, first Cppi quarter field goal. David Flinders got the Vikings on sfflis the scoreboard two plays into the Bfe; second period with a one yard i fc sneak. Justin Johnston, who carried tot tie ball 32 times for 137 yards, rali ripped off big chunks of yardage to al fc setup the touchdown. , lots "Justin struggled some on it ip defense, but offensively he had one nibs : great game," said Viking coach Bill !4d Mikelson. "Not only did he run the oil, :: tall very well, he kicked five ol, E straight extra points and scored two fair of our touchdowns," Mikelson yem added, bya: ji rtr: PG moved out in front 14-- 3 with obj: mother second quarter touchdown iefiu that completed a 79 yard drive, rtion prr Chad Fraughton found the end zone (ds ji: ,r 20 yards out after taking a er ste Flinders' screen pass and followed iODt!: Mocks to the goal line, where he in rife Ned over the last Spanish Fork tender to score. Fraughton's score came with 1:33 left in the half. But Spanish Fork's Joe Aldredge took the short Viking kickoff, pounded into a crowd of Viking tacklers and appeared to be stopped. At least the PG bench thought he was stopped and the defense started onto the field only to see Aldredge pop out and race to the 14 yard line. A half the distance penalty on PG for having too many players on the field moved the ball to the 7. Reese Brunson hit Eric Smith with a touchdown pass and Grotegut's kick made it 14-1- 0 at halftime. Fumbling on the first play of the second half, a mistake coaches fear as much as any, struck the Dons and Russ VanDyke recovered at the five to set up a Johnston run and extra point kick that quickly had the Vikes ahead 21-1- An unintentional onside kick following the score was recovered by the Vikes and at that point everything was going PG's way. However, the Dons maintained composure, held and forced PG to punt on a fourth and short situation. Suddenly the Dons got a break when the short 8 yard punt was taken on the hop in front of the PG bench and returned to the 20. Four plays later, Davis scored on a two yard run and the Dons were only down four. 21-1- To the delight of a big Homecoming crowd, the Vikes then put together two fourth quarter drives to ice the game. Johnston added another touchdown on a two yard run and Flinders scored his second touchdown as the Vikes controlled the ball for most of the final quarter. PG's defense allowed Spanish Fork just 40 yards in the second half. Fumble recoveries and two Burke Watkins pass interceptions helped blunt the Dons previously undefeated offense. "Watkins did an excellent job on (Eric) Smith and his interception in the end zone was a very big play for us," said Viking defensive coach, Darold Henry. PG rushed 61 times for 265 yards and had 59 yards in the air. Spanish Fork ran 26 times for 97 yards and added 41 in the air. The Vikes had 40 yards in penalties to 15 for Pg is 0 in Region 8 and travels to Carbon Friday night to play a surprisingly good Carbon team. In the junior varsity game, PG was a 21-14 winner as Russ Van-Dyk- e directed the offense and Brandon Despain had a good day carrying the b all. Gary Llewellyn played well on defense for PG. The junior varsity does not play this week. |
