Show Review - Wednesday, Sept. 23, 1987 - Page 5 Pleasant Grove Firemen's Auxiliary begin fire safety, prevention program in schools All elementary school children in Pleasant Grove have been pretested regarding their knowledge of fire safety, according to the Pleasant Grove Firemen's Auxiliary. The main goal of the Fire Aux. is to have community fire prevention knowledge. There will be a National Fire Drill on Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m. and all members of the community are encouraged to participate. A flyer will be sent home with the school children on Oct. 5 to remind families of this event. The Auxiliary said that 80 per cent of all fire related deaths happen in the home. Of these, 50 per cent are children aged 13 or under. Another family program on fire prevention will be held Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. on television. The channel will be announced later. This will be a true story about a girl who was burned and how her family worked together. The Fire Ladies and McDonalds in American Fork will also sponsor a Fire Chief-for-a-da- A box for names will be located at McDonalds and children may enter. The winner will get to spend a day with the fire department and will receive a fireman's hat. t: v 1 Missionary farewell lanned Sunday l)rVm. Mlf Musical numbers added variety to J( e fashion show and display tables were set up around the cultural hall. It was a great place to gather ideas for Christmas projects. Many items were products of truly professionals with a needle and thread. Beautiful quilts and afghans lined the walls. Geese were displayed in a number of creations. A variety of dolls were seen and many crocheted items. rhelma Hooley receives il Hue ribbon at state fair I Y J' ' Y ' t , At tl years of age and after 78 an of quilting, Thelma J. Hooley lAmerican Fork won a first place he ribbon at the Utah State Fair r quilting. The first place honor w for a beautiful baby quilt ituring an embroidered clown. Mrs. Hooley began quilting in the rly 1900's at age 9 sitting at the 4 of her pioneer Grandmother ' , a master quilt maker in 'ttsant GrOve. Over the years, Mrs. Hooley has ude hundreds of fine quilts for friends and charitable tetions but had never entered "wrk in competition. She tad just completed the prize quilt as a gift to her "Shier, Gaylyn, of Salt Lake City, 51 Prior to the opening of the State air. jjjylyn, impressed with the quilt, 2 the liberty of entering it on f of her mother without con-n- g her. Mrs. Hooley was both fPrised and pleased hearing 'the entry and the blue ribbon art fs. Hooley grew up in Pleasant and along with her late nd, Lee, raised a family of 10 Jren on a farm in Orem, after she lived many years in r Thelma Hooley A lifetime active member of the L.D.S. Church, Mrs. Hooley presently resides at the Heritage Retirement Center in American Fork where she keeps busy visiting family, friends and practicing the art of quilt making. |
