Show Review - Thursday, February 21, 1985 - Page 9 LPWO win battle of giants in league What proved to be a week of upsets and surprises started off with the shootout at the OK Corral between Lindon Precision and Walker Oil and Steve Peterson's as they battled for the league leadership. With LPWO leading 34 to 27 at the third quarter mark, and seeming to have the game well in hand as Hansen and Walker dominated the b oards and Hansen and Howe scoring at will, along came Joe Tate. Up until the fourth quarter LPWO had held Tate to 2 points. He broke out and scored a big 20 points in the fourth quarter, and led the really which just about nipped the LPWo team at the wire. However, some key free throw shooting by the LPWO team that saw them hit 16 of 18 free throws in the fourth quarter, gave them a hard-earne- d, two point victory 64-6- In what was billed as the other big game of the week, the older and more experienced Kinsmen, led by Mike Shoell with 19, and four other team members in double figures, beat the younger and potentially really good young ASITrinnamans tpam hv 99 nninrc 79t;ft AQT i;qc aA good ball game that ultimately was won by a foul shot. Scott Robbins with 17 again led the resurging Christensen's, while the usually high-scorin- g Heaps was held to 16 for Argus Tech. Mark Atwood scored 24 as he led WBL to a 61 to 48 victory over ' Cottles Insurance. Peterson with 20 led the Cottles scoring. Kay Robinson of Lamoreaux again led the league in scoring for the week as he hit for a big 32 points to lead Lamoreaux Concrete past Kelley's Plumbing 72-6- Brown with 21 for. Kellys helped keep the game close except for the big third quarter when Walker and Robinson led the 18 to 13 charge. Two all-st- games will be played on Monday, Feb. 25, with the league, tournament beginning on Monday, March 4. Parings will be announced in next week's paper. Leading the way for the Lady Vikings was Lila Fugal with 11 points and 20 rebounds. Margo Nelson scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds, followed by Cherylnn Johnson with 6 points and 9 rebounds, Kathy Maughan with 5 points and 7 rebounds, and Debbie Fisher with 4 points and 6 rebounds. The Lady Vikings played outs-tanding defense and controlled the boards. They played an outstanding game. The win was a very important Region 8 win because it evened Uieir Region 8 record at which J ties them for third place. The top lour teams qualify for the state playoffs, so this win puts the L; v Vikings in good shape to qualify for the state playoffs. The Lady Vikings have an im-portant Region 8 contest next Thursday at Payson. Everyone is encouraged to come support them. In the JV contest, the young Lady Vikings lost a heartbreaker to the Lady Dons 43-3- They got behind early and just could not quite catch up. Several times during the fourth quarter the Lady Vikings cut the lead to four points, but just couldn't get their shots to fall. The game was a lot closer than the final score, as the Lady Dons hit 6 out of 9 free throws to insure their win. Kim Woffinden led the young tcim with 11 points, Jayleen Walker had 10, Sharron Brady and Andrea Wallace had 4, Anita Larsen 3 and Trin Card chipped in with 2. Sgt. assigned Guam duty Air Force Sgt. His wife, Vickie, is the daughter of Ronald G. and Joyce Farley, Pleasant Grove. The sergeant is a 1974 graduate of Provo High School. Varsity cagers down Sp. Fork naround jump shots. Andy Osborne led the Don offensive attack with 14 points. When PG's lead become in-surmountable at 54-4- 2 with 1:35 to play, Spanish Fork's Coach, Mike Gardner sent in the junior varsity with instructions to "blitz em." The "blitz" turned into a hack, chop, foul and tackle 90 seconds that put a smudge on an otherwise clean and physically hard fought game. It was very fortunate that no player was seriously injured during those brutal last seconds. Finally, a Spanish Fork player was overheard saying, "lets quit fouling and get this over with." VanDyke was ' the top scorer on the floor with 16 points, just a point ahead of Kitchen and Mosher. The win raised PG's region record to 2 and put the Vikings back in a tie for first place as Payson dumped Carbon, last weeks leader, 63-5- PG, Carbon and Springville have identical records. This week PG will play at Springville. ,. ' Over . the weekend, Springville " came from behind to edge Lehi 46-4- 5 to earn a share of the regions top spot. By JACK HILL The game was physically rough and with five minutes to play, close. A Pleasant Grove time out with the score 44-4- 0 for the Vikes set the stage for a 15-- 2 scoring run that boosted PG to a 59-4- 2 win over Spanish Fork Friday. Coach Keith Allred sent his troops back into action following the time out with instructions to "run two interchanges before looking for the shot." Like a well rehearsed drama, all five Vikes got into motion and after running 20 seconds off the clock, Brad Kitchen took a pass at the top of the key, turned and fired a strike to Kerry VanDyke. Thanks to a nice "down pick" from Scott Mosher, VanDyke was open for a 15 footer that settled softly through the net to give the Vikes a 6 point lead. Spanish Fork missed their shot and the Vikes went into their deliberate pattern offense. Again, Kitchen received the pass and this time, on the opposite side of the floor, he found VanDyke free for another nice jumper and PG led 48- -, 40. , ......... Panic swept the Don team and last week's winners over Springville sent a parade of Viking players to the foul line. Kitchen dropped in a pair while Mosher hit one of his 15 points for the night. Kitchen finished the game with 15 points and just as important, the big Viking post man had 12 rebounds. A big part of the "physical battle" during the game was between Kitchen and Thayne Carlisle. Carlisle, a football player turned into a very respectable inside basketball player, had 12 points for the Don's on a series of soft tur- - Police investigate thefts Konsigned Kar Kor 860 West Slate Road, Pleasant Grove, reported two thefts to Pleasant Grove Police this past week.
