Show , Romance, marriage and Valentine's Day p.g. blab .... - : By MARC'KI.l.A WAI.KKK Romance is wonderful, isn't it? Valentine's Day is just past and what a fun day it is. It is such a positive day and I really like it for that reason. The kids are older now and don't take valentines to school for all their friends, although I must say there is a few of the male gender that they would like to take one to if they had the courage. It was fun back a few years when they prepared valentines for all of their friends. It took them days to get them ready. The girls put more time into the project than the boys did. The girls selected carefully the right valentine for each friend and the teacher. The boys put names on any old valentine for anyone except occasionally, if they liked one little girl a lot, they might pick one out just for her. This was not too likely, however. Some years the children made their valentines, some years they punched them out of a book, and sometimes they used the ready-made ready-made ones. They made gorgeous valentine boxes at school to bring their valentines home in and then I would sit down with them and we would go through the box examining and exclaiming over each valentine. Now they make a heart shaped cookie for their very special friends or buy them a treat of some sort. Up at the high school the FHA makes and sells valentine cookies as I was listening to a colleague tell about making valentines out of old wallpaper books back in the olden days She said they would work really hard on making the valentines look nice and take them out and deliver them to their friends. (You know how it goes, put the valentines on the porch, ring the doorbell and run.) Before the evening was over, some of their wallpaper book valentines would return, the former name erased off and their name put on. Not everyone could even afford the old wallpaper book to make valentines, you see. We used to tie a string onto a valentine, leave the card on the porch ring the doorbell, run and hide, and pull the string when someone came out and bent over to pickup the valentine. That was mean. One of the best valentines I ever got was from a retarded neighbor boy who thought I was alright because I did not tease him as others did. He gave me a lovely chocolate candy heart. It was very special. But back to the romance. Some men are very romantic. Most are not. But one of the most romantic things happened last week after the BYU-Colorado State basketball game. Alan Pollard had arranged for Cosmo to deliver a bouquet of flowers with an engagement ring attached to a special friend of his during half time. When the game was over and Alan had showered and dressed he ca ' back out onto the court. He knelt"1' one knee on the basketball floor 011 proposed to his girl friend. Of course, she accepted. uv could resist a proposal like than Especially on Valentine's Day Paul James said Alan hadn' ' received a hug like that tw someone tried to deliberately f him in the UTEP game. He J noted that this proposal gaVe ? meaning to the word "courting " The Athletic Director said K. might have to charge Alan JJ 1 court time. (They all had fUn JS 1 their puns.) " One things for sure, Alan's tin f will never forget how he propose 1 her. " A marriage counselor who w f0 interviewed on television 1 d Valentine's Day Thursday said th sometimes Valentine's Day cause rifts in marriages. 0311 flu b I suppose that could be true n iiM2 every other wife on the block m card, flower or candy and one ditto? she might feel rather unloved am that could be a problem. Personally, I got a unique, original Valentine and I thought it was preti tfl -neat. So, thanks, Honey. f Romance is one of my favorite r things. I like romantic movies romantic stories, romantic men' pleas: everything romantic. ' i2 Romance is for girls. But boys are i the only ones who can give it. Give Ifac some, guys ! Happy romance to all of Lin yu- sported a fund raiser. It is exciting to have a cookie delivered to you during last period, especially if it is from that special someone. To show how inflation has set in, I used to get the children a cherry bar for their valentine since it was chocolate and pink inside which seemed quite in keeping with the season. Now they want one pound chocolate bars. Yes, they were more easily satisfied when they were little and didn't know any better. Sugar cookies in the heart shape are nice to look at but no one at our house eats them too well so after a few years of trying I do not make those anymore. |
