"We need the support of local citizens as well as people from all over the state if our expansion plans are to be realized," Mrs. Spencer concluded. After auditioning at Tacoma, Washington, Jacqueline P. Colledge and her little band of Utah Youth Ballet performers were accepted into the prestigious Pacific Regional Ballet Association, the premier company for all the western states. The Utah Group was one of four groups auditioning with the affiliate of the national association of regional ballet, and of the four they were the only ones accepted as a full performing member The Utah dancers performed Romantique with music by John Barry and Vivace with a Dvorak score. When they completed their second performance they received an overwhelming ovation. "We knew we'd done something right," said artistic director Colledge. The main teacher at the workshops conference was Ruth C. Tetrinovic, artistic director of the Marin Ballet Company. During the week the girls par-ticipated in masters classes taught by Richard Englund, Director of American Ballet Theatre II of New York City. They took character classes from Teodoro Morca from Morca Dance Theatre, Fleming Holley who triumphant performance on the coast. The.Utah Youth Ballet was originated in the fail--of 197& under the sponsorship of the Utah Pageant of the Arts. They presented a Christmas Concert that year and each yaer since they have per-formed the traditional Christmas extravaganza "The Nutcracker," and a spring concert. William Christensen, former director of Ballet West, long recognized as one of the most notable ballet artists and teachers in the United States, visited Utah Youth Ballet headquarters recently. He was excited about the room available to Utah Youth Ballet and the wooden floors they have to perform on. "Do you realize how lucky you are?" he asked. Melissa Pane a TnomKr- - nt v,tu danced with the Royal Danish Ballet, and Leslie James Tessemer, associate director of Baltimore Ballet. Tessemer also served as adjuticator for the concert. Some of the ballet groups "per-forming at the gala were Sacramento Ballet, Ballet Pacifica of Laguna Beach and Pasadena Dance Theatre. Ballet Pacifica is to the Laguna Beach Pageant of the Masters as Utah Youth Ballet is to the Utah Pageant of the Arts. "We're really pleased with this new alliance," said Betty Spencer, member of the board of the Utah Pageant of the Arts. "We were very"well received and asked to dance at the performance program at the conclusion of the workshop," Colledge said. "I also realize now how important mothers (Sarah Price) costumes are to the success of our ballet program." A group of ballet enthusiasts including Pageant of the Arts board members, guild members and family members were on hand at the airport to welcome the group as they returned from Washington. A bouquet of roses was presented to Mrs. Colledge and each member of the Corps received roses as they stepped off the plane after their j - "ivuiuvi Ul 1 UULU Ballet, has been awarded a four-ye-scholarship to Christensen's Ballet Academy, a feeder program for Ballet West. Utah Pageant of the Arts, a non-profit corporation, has committed itself to the perpetuation of the arts in Utah. Not only do they sponsor Utah Youth Ballet, but they now sponsor a modern dance workshop under the direction of Doris Trujillo and have agreed to sponsor the Alpine Chamber Society with Leon Honey, Orem, director. The board of directors of the Utah Pageant of the Arts, hopes that the -- A4pie Chamber Society now working under tne"TimbrellaQfthe pageant board, will develop and"" grow into a resident orchestra which will eventually furnish music for the Utah Youth Ballet and perhaps the Pageant of the Arts. "It's mandated that all profits go back into the program. We hope that everybody in Utah and the entire western area of our country will be effected by the cultural programs that have been inaugurated and sustained by the Utah Pageant of the Arts, said Mrs. Spencer. She emphasizes however, that support is needed for the expansion May concerts scheduled for Temple Square Concerts for the Temple Square Concert Series start at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are no longer required for the concerts, which are free of charge and are sponsored by the Activities Committee of the LDS Church.
