Show Small businesses getting bigger Small business in America is getting bigger all the time. And more important. Example: There are almost 14 million small businesses today more than three times the total 30 years ago. Example: During the lasL recession, while big businesses were laying off workers, small business continued to hire. Result: During 1980-82 there was a net job increase of almost one million workers, all thanks to small firms. Example: Since the economic recovery began in 1982, employment in industries dominated by small firms has grown faster than in big business-dominated industries. Example: Small business employs about half of the country's private labor force. The conclusion comes easy: The health of America depends in large part on our small business owners. That's a very good reason for all of us to join in saluting these entrepreneurs during National Small Business Week, to be celebrated May 6-12. In proclaiming Small Business Week, President Reagan said, "America's "strength lies in the ingenuity and preseverance of its I people. No other group of Americans better exemplifies these qualities than the Nation's small business owners." We join in that salute. |
