Cedar Hills seeks sewer extension Mayor Max Adams of Cedar Hills met with the council at the request of Mayor David Holdaway lo discuss sewer extension possibilities in the north part of Pleasant Grove and Cedar Hills. Mayor Holdaway explained that loth Pleasant Grove and Cedar Hills have applied for block grant . funds to extend the sewer in their immunities. The first option for the funds was given to Salem City to put in a waste treatment plant but their use of the funds is contingent upon a bond election. They wre given 90 days to get the backing. If Salem cannot use the money within the 90 days then Pleasant Crave and Cedar Hills receive the grant Pleasant Grove's share would be $150,000. I Pleasant Grove would like to take the sewer lines from 1300 W. and State Road to 1 100 N. then up 1 100 , N. to the Firwood Subdivision. Residents of that area would then have to pay to have the line taken into the subdivision, Mayor Holdaway explained. Cedar Hills is interested in putting in sewer lines and hooking on either to American Fork or Pleasant Grove. Mayor Holdaway aid that better gravitational flow might come by hooking on to Pleasant Grove's lines. Whichever way Cedar Hills goes it will need to contact the Timpanogos Special Service District about using the treatment plant, Mayor Holdaway noted. A monitoring station would be placed where the Cedar Hills lines would join Pleasant Grove, it was noted. Mayor Adams also expressed concern about the $700 a month fire protection fee which his city plans to pay Pleasant Grove. He said that this constitutes one-third of then-tax then-tax base. The mayor asked the council to consider lowering the monthly fee and making a charge per each response to the Cedar Hills area. He said that the Pleasant Grove Fire Department had only made one run to Cedar Hills this year and one run last year. He said that townspeople planned to spray the weeds around the community to reduce the chance of brush fires in the area. Mayor Holdaway assured Mayor Adams that the city would consider his request as they prepared the next year's budget. Farmers Insurance submitted the apparent low bid for liability insurance for the city. Their bid was $19,304 while that of the only other bidder was $25,675 from Olympus Insurance Agency. National nursing home week Several senior citizens from the Alpine Valley Care Center were in attendance while Mayor Holdaway signed a proclamation making National Nursing Home Week in Pleasant Grove on May 13 through May 20. Assisting the senior citizens were Jim Nix, administrator of the care center and Barbara Glerih, recreational director. Miscellaneous business The city council reviewed a request to exchange Pleasant Grove Irrigation Co. water shares for Murdock Canal water shares. They decided that because of the value of the Murdock shares they would hold onto them at the present time. The Mayor reported that the State Department of Transporta tion has decided to put in curb, gutter and sidewalk on 100 E. between 1200 N. and 1800 North as it seemed more vital than to put it on the state road from Third East and State Road to 1000 S. Robbie Duvall, Ruth and Karla Bezzant represented the American Legion Auxiliary in asking that Pleasant Grove's Poppy Day be Saturday, May 26. Boy and girl staters and Cub Scouts will be assisting in the sale in the city, they said. This was approved by the council. Strawberry X)ays Members of the Pleasant Grove Strawberry Days Association met with the city council to acquaint them with a situation which has arisen in regard to sales taxes on items sold during last year's Strawberry Days Celebration. Chairman Harold Jacklin said that the legislature did not enact a law which would have exempted groups such as the Association from paying sales taxes. Mr. Jacklin said that the taxes would come to somewhat over $2,000 and they would pay them under protest, hoping the legislature would later enact a law to prevent this tax. He also announced that a youth talent show will be held at the Alhambra Theater on Tuesday, June 19, as a part of the Strawberry Days Celebration. There will be no charge for this activity. City Engineer City Engineer Lee Wimmer told the council that they had run into difficulty boring under the canal """with the Wade Springs water line because of large boulders. He said they might have to tunnel through which would slightly raise the cost of the project. He also noted that the city ought to replace the old section of the Wade Springs flow line. This would run about $60,000 and involve putting a 10 inch line in place of the present six inch line. The old line is deteriorating badly and the additional water saved would reduce pumping costs of the Monson Well which were over $24,000 last year. |
