Shawn Story, Pleasant Grove senior pitcher, held Mountain View to five hits, leading the Vikings to a 10-- play-of- f baseball win Friday. Originally scheduled for Wednesday, the game was delayed by weather and Region Seven playoff games. Timpview needed to win just one game earlier in the week but lost three straight to give Mountain View the chance to play Pleasant Grove. The weather turned out to be the best of the year as the two teams met on the Pleasant Grove diamond. Story got the call and set the Bruins down in order in the first inning. In the second, Bob Conlee reached first on an error but Story picked him off with a nice move. Bruin pitcher, sophomore Gary Cameron, looked terrific through the first four Viking hitters. But when Shawn Bezzant nailed a 01 pitch over the right field fence, Cameron began to struggle. His confidence, so evident in the early going, began to disappear. Jesse Walker followed with a single and then stole second and when the throw from catcher Steve Paulson sailed into centcrfield, Walker continued to third. Paulson, a stocky red head, had taken a foul tip in the right shoulder two picUhes earlier and his arm was obviously hurting. After seeing Paulson get hit and observing what it did to his throwing arm, Pleasant Grove gave the green light to every runner and Paulson was unable to make a good throw. Mountain View got out of the inning after intentionally walking Story and getting the next hitter on a called third strike. Story took the mound and retired the Bruins on six pitches and the Vikes were quickly back at work on Cameron and Paulson. Tracy Flinders led off with a base hit to right. Matt Norman hit a slow roller to Chris Peterson at shortstop. Peterson fielded the ball nicely and fired in the direction of second base but the throw was wide and went into the outfield and Flinders came to third. On the next pitch, Norman stole second as Paulson could only look at his coach and shrug his injured shoulder. Shane Phillips got behind in the count but battled back to hit a Wl pitch to right that scored Flinders. Phillips promptly took second and Bronson walked to load the bases. Bezzant then got a base on balls as Cameron continued having trouble finding the strike zone. A wild pitch brought Phillips home making the score 4-- Then Cameron suddenly found the stuff he had to start the game and proceeded to strike (jut the next three Viking hitters. Dale Craney, who played well for Mountain View, got a base hit to. start the fourth and he showed the Vikes that Bruins could steal bases by taking second. Story tried to pick off Craney at second but the throw skipped away and the quick Bruin centerfielder went to third and later scored when a ground ball got past the Pleasant Grove first baseman. Pleasant Grove picked up a run in the fourth on a Scott Mosher base hit. Mosher stole second and scored on a Phillips' looping single to right center. The Vikes eventually loaded the bases and Walker ripped the ball into the alley in left field where Conlee made the defensive play oi the game with a great leaping catch to rob Walker of at least a double and end the inning. Mountain View brought in Corey Carter to pitch the fifth and he got the Vikes out, one, two, three. Chris Sheriff led off with a legitimate hit in the sixth for the Bruins and moved to second on a fielders choice. On that play, Norman fielded the ball between first and second and took the out himself that ended in a collision between Norman and the Bruin base runner. Jene Paulson drove in Sheriff making it a 5-- game with Pleasant Grove coming up in the bottom of the sixth. Flinders doubled to the deepest part of the ball park to start the inning. The fired-u- p Thunderbirds seemed to play the entire first half in front of the Pleasant Grove goal. Several good defensive plays from Mark Clements and Brad Kitchen prevented more Timpview scores. During the intermission, Coaches Rod Jackman and Leon Smith got the Vikes to turn the tables and the Vikings played most of the last half in front of the Thunderbird goal but were unable to score.
