Eleven must be their "lucky number" Eleven boys, all eleven-year-old- s, from the various Pleasant Grove Little League teams, are the all-sta- rs who took first place in the state competition held Aug. 13-1- 8 in Payson. The event - the annual Walt Silva Invitational Tourney - where each boy of the winning team receives an individual recognition trophy, is represented by many cities from Northern Utah County to as far south as Nephi. Competition was tough this year but these 11 ended up beating some of the teams from Spanish Fork and Orem and in their final game ran away from a Provo team. They showed outstanding defensive play in the field behind the able pitching of Shane Smith, Danny Schoonover, Danny Han-sge- Eric Johnson and Cole Kelly. Orem radges past sophs Orem scored last and held on to nudge PG's sophomores in a see-sa- game Thursday. The Tigers scored on the second play of the game, a 54 yard pass down the sideline. The extra point kick was good and Orem led 7-- 0 early in the first period. PG battled back in the second period when a fierce Viking rush produced two interceptions. Ricky Mayo batted an Orem pass in the air and Cody Bell picket it off to set up the first Viking score. Good runs from Vallen Blackburn and Karl. Aland set up tne 'flea flicker' and Scott Jensen passed 54 yards to Mike Albrecht. The quick Viking tight end reached the three yard ,lft$r before being tripped up. Two plays later Blackburn crashed into the endzone from the one yard line. Vikes took over and ran out the clock. With cement truck roaring, cranes digging, electric cables being run across the playing field and construction crews choosing to work on the new lights the only two hours the football field was used all week, the sophomores returned for the second half and kicked off to Orem. The Tigers executed a smooth 7 play drive in all the confusion but Bell batted down the two point try to hold the Tiger lead to 21-1- On the following kickoff, PG put together a nice 10 play, 56 yard drive that was capped by Thomas sneaking in from the one behind Chris Jensen, Russ Johnson and Larsen. Five runners carried,' Thomas, Aland, Paul Mattinson, Bell and Blackburn had runs of 1 to 12 yards. Bell put the two points on the board on a option right and the Viking lead was 24-2- 1 with three minutes to play in the third period. Orem used a big fourth down 28 yard pass to set up the game win-ning score. The two pint try was stopped short. With five minutes to play, PG took over deep in their own territory and executed another beautiful drive to the Orem 15 yard line. With 1:10 remaining a terrific hit by the outside Orem linebacker popped the ball loose and the Tigers recovered. The. Vikes used all their remaining timeouts but the Tigers were able to fall on the ball three times and run out the clock. Overall, the Vikes played their best offensive game to date with a sound running attack and com-pleted 7 of 16 passes with no in-terceptions. Mattinson surfaced as a shifty tailback but his future playing is in doubt due to a possible broken finger suffered in the game. "Our defense against the run was terrific, but we had trouble covering one of Orems outside receivers" said coach Jack Hill. Hill added "it was our fault that we didn't have a defense ready to give our some help." PG will play at Payson Thursday at 4 p.m. The Viking J.V. lost at Orem, 28-- The J.V. plays at P.G. tomorrow at 4p.m. Quarterback Evan Thomas then passed to Jensen for the extra two points and the Vikes went on top 8-- Striking through the air, the Tigers regained the lead on a five yard pass but the Viking defense stopped the two point try. Another interception, this one by Jensen, gave the ball to PG and the Vikes drove 15 yards on the ground. Thomas gained 3, Aland 6, and Thomas picked up a first down and gained three more. At the 10, Thomas found Jensen in the end-zon- e for the score. On the option play to the right side, Thomas kept the ball on the two point try and a 16-1- 3 lead belonged to PG at halftime. With a minute to go in the half, Chad Atkinson intercepted at the six yard line to stop an Orem drive.
